Categorical Compartmentalization! That is my strategy. I work on common-industry projects in batches. That allows me to avoid confusion. For me, it’s a strategy of switch on this, switch off that, at different times of the day. I simply enjoy the challenge!

For example, I do not take any calls on Friday for business, and I avoid client meetings on Monday so I can start and end my week by working on my business.

Something I find helpful while planning my tasks is starting with something light. We tend to try and tackle the most challenging brief first, but in my experience, try and work on the easiest brief first to get you in the creative rhythm for the day. Not only will this serve as a small win, but it will also boost your mood to take over other tasks. I also follow this rule whenever I am feeling stuck. I write the easiest copy first, then retry the hardest.

I tend to be a linear writer, not being able to move on to the next copy point until I've got the first more or less nailed down. So I aim to block off chunks of time for writing work, even knowing more often than not I'll need to go back to it later. Don't include the work you have done in one single area of your portfolio. Organize them according to the industry you have worked. After all the portfolio is about the client not about you. It has to sell what you can do to help them. Make the portfolio in such a way that each person in a certain industry can know that they can benefit from hiring you.

This one is my favorite. Sometimes, we have to embrace the 'jack-of-all-trades' side of ourselves. This means exploring the different things that we like and enjoy - maybe even some things we might not be so keen of (or so we think), to lean into our learning curves, stay versatile, and remind ourselves that there is so much more for us to experience and contribute to through the various jobs and clients that we take on.

As you acquire more clients, it can become a bit difficult to manage everything. So, don't shy away from hiring an intern or a full-time copywriter to help you handle the workload. It's true that you cannot manage your client base single-handedly. Sooner or later, you would have to consider task delegation. But why its important when you can make more money anyway? Well, when you outsource, you develop a team which can later turn into an entire organization. Sometimes its better to share tasks and let infalliable people in to broaden your income stream.

I like writing. I like researching. I don’t like searching for leads or managing finances. Delegating isn't about losing control. It's about smartly managing your workload. Teamwork makes the dream work! 01/ Identify what you like doing. And what you don’t. Focus on what you do best and consider outsourcing tasks that are outside your expertise or take up too much time. 02/ Find help from people you like. And do a good job. Even when outsourcing, keep an eye on the progress and quality of the work. It's your reputation on the line, after all. 03/ Balance cost vs. benefits Outsourcing should make your life easier, not harder.

If you want to outsource, make sure you know the capabilities of the freelancer or agency you want to delegate the work too. If their work ethics is poor, consider delegating to someone else. You don't want to hurt your brand in the end.

Use AI for proof- reading. Tell it what to look for and it will pick up typos, duplications and tense inconsistencies in a flash.

Your business needs to serve your life - not the other way around. This means you can structure your working day however you want - start times, stop times, when you take meetings, and when you don't. I don't take meetings on Mondays or Fridays. I use my mornings for personal time and typically don't open my laptop until 11 - noon. I'm done with work at 5:30 every day. No checking email, no doing "just one more" task. My working hours are defined and structured so they don't take over my life.

At the end of the day, you're a business owner, and you need to look after yourself to look after your business. Take time for activities that fuel your creativity, whether it's reading, exploring new interests, or engaging in hobbies outside your profession. It's great for fresh inspiration too. A balanced routine and allowing yourself breaks aren't luxuries, they're necessities.

I’ve gotten flack from other professionals for what I’m about to share. I do not take any meetings before 1:00 pm, except for one standing client. I use the morning for my in-depth routine. That way I am primed and good to go to work on multiple products as needed. I create my work schedule the night before and use block scheduling to task out the day. My answer for any optimal work situation is having the highest level of self-care based on what works for you.

You have to! The market is too uncertain. You can work by project or by days of the week etc but it’s essential to have more than one client. I would also recommend they all be around similar niches so you can work smarter and faster and be a compelling expert in the area. Also make sure at least one allows you a byline. Will help recruit the rest.

In our field, people often like to glorify hustle culture and unhealthy lifestyles. Don't get sucked into that. Take care of yourself first. You'll do your best work and meet your goals faster if you put yourself first.

If you sign multiple clients because of greed, you'll disappoint one or more of them - and that's bad for your reputation and business growth.
