How can you balance detail-oriented and big-picture thinking in VC?

In venture capital, big picture thinking involves assessing market trends, identifying disruptive technologies, and understanding long-term industry dynamics. Successful investors focus on the broader landscape to make informed decisions about where to allocate capital for sustainable growth and returns.

A Venture Capital fund will have several levels of partners. The General Partners or Managing Directors may be responsible for overall fund strategy. They provide value via portfolio construction. Partners may be responsible for deal sourcing and negotiating deals. And Principals may be responsible for due diligence and initial prospect contact and evaluation. Mentoring will help new Venture Capitalists to understand how they will provide value to the Fund.

There are two elements here: 1) Does the opportunity fit your criteria (market size / potential return / management team / scale / sector) That's the big picture. You should be able to get this from the deck but if not, then from the first intro call with the founder. The detail comes into the digging into the unit economics / customer concentration etc this is the information that you will need to convince your fund to invest into the business when you write your IC paper. Think about it as a decision tree / funnel

The venture capitalist (VC) should approach their role with a mindset akin to the letter "T." This means delving into the chosen vertical extensively while also exploring its breadth. Recognize that not everyone is an expert in every aspect, which is where your network, particularly subject matter experts (SMEs), becomes invaluable. It's crucial to understand that implementing technology too early can be prohibitively expensive, yet waiting too long can lead to irrelevance. One of the most critical aspect in decision making is to balance high level and details. As a VC I found myself often dealing with it. Generally speaking a good framework to deal with this situation is: - validate the high level first - risk mitigation second - invest time validating details after (only if these emerge into your risk mitigation exercise) Usually, prioritizing and understanding core differentiator could help saving a lot of time. In Europe for example I notice VC spending way too much time on details compared to USA VC.

When assigning a team on a project, ensure that you have the right mix of people with strength in each of those skills. Encourage team members to listen to each other and leverage off each other skills and tendencies

From my experience, dedicating specific times to focus on the granular details of deals, such as financial models and due diligence, while also allocating time to zoom out and consider the broader industry trends and portfolio strategy, is key. This might involve setting aside different parts of your day or week for each type of thinking. Being deliberate about this separation allows for deeper focus and prevents getting lost in the weeds, ensuring both the micro and macro perspectives are adequately addressed.

Understanding the minimal focus time required by the tasks is important. For detailed-oriented work, you may need complete time to conduct due diligence, adjust financial modeling, evaluate portfolio management, etc. If you constantly switch your tasks to big-picture thinking while doing detailed work, you will get distracted. At the end, it will hurts your productivity. Identifying your job responsibilities, building up your task management system, and having a clear understanding of the interrelationship between the 2 types of work will help you find a better way to fulfill your job expectations.

Develop two sets of contacts. 1. Big Picture Mentors - brevity is key - offer to do the work on their behalf by - writing recommendations, email introductions and doing most of the legwork required to maximize the relationship and their impact. 2. Detail Oriented Thinking - Write a blog and solicit feedback on LinkedIn from your network. - Read blogs from OpenVC and engage with industry experts who focus on niche issues of interest. - Use AI platforms to evaluate pitch decks - the technology may validate other opinions you have received.

New entrants to Venture Capital will benefit from mentoring. Funds that mentor their colleagues will tend to have more effective operations, just as funds that mentor their portfolio companies tend to have higher rates of returns (~5% alpha, according to Harvard Business School). If you are new to Venture Capital, do not be shy about asking for mentorship.

They can help identify when you might be getting too bogged down in the details or, conversely, when you might be glossing over crucial data. This collaborative approach ensures a more rounded view, helping to align the minutiae of your work with the overarching goals and vision of your investment strategy.

Think like an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur always has to switch between sky high 10,000 ft vision and hand-on operational tasks. As a VC, focus on both macro trends and specific metrics in the present. Be comfortable with this context switching, it's one of the skills required for both entrepreneurs and investors.

Being a VC is more of an art than science as one has to take a subjective call on the business idea, team, market, opportunities and teams approach and hard core financial analysis..... It's a kaleidoscope of gauging these some subjective and some objective parameters and balancing an investment decision. Experience is doing this has no short cut too.

Big Picture over Everything (BPoE). This means you should be focused on the big picture. Think of it like a cave that you have to figure your way out of. These are the barriers to mass adoption. Like a cave or problem to solve. Solve the hard part right for the largest market and get the hard part right first. Are there details blocking you? Now you have an incentive to unblock yourself by paying attention to the details. Ge t through the tunnel (ask for help from people who are more focused on that specific tunnel to get through). Reach out for help from partners. Stay close to your investment long term. Big picture is long term value for the largest number of customers. Don't trip over CAC to get LTV.

1 is to think BIG and that´s where you are going in the journey, think bigger than big! Than cut that roadmap in small digestible steps, where everyone feels and understands that every step is 1 toward the BIG picture and make every small win a BIG thing.

Do both, whether top-down or bottom-up, it is essential to have the complete picture. Some entrepreneurs are more on the broader vision, others are immersed in technology. A successful business must be able to travel up and down the detail level and have a full view of its opportunities, operations and risks.
