How can online learning platforms motivate and engage students?

Online platforms lack the full interaction provided by in-person classrooms. We should strive to compensate with very structured goals, clear tasks and relevant content, and provide class dynamics that foster active participation with different and engaging activities. A big challenge is the temptation for the students to turn off their cameras and get distracted because of boring and monotonous presentations. So, besides providing relevant content and conveying the importance of the participation in active learning mode, we should provide diversity in the delivery.

Online learning platforms can motivate and engage students by incorporating interactive content, gamified elements, and multimedia resources. Foster a sense of community through discussion forums and virtual collaborations. Offer diverse learning formats like videos, quizzes, and simulations to cater to various learning styles. Provide timely feedback and set clear goals to track progress. Encourage self-directed exploration and use real-world examples to enhance relevance. Finally, integrate social elements, allowing students to connect and share experiences, creating a more engaging online learning environment.

Learning flexibility may be the more sought requirement in most of the cases. (My personal opinion. One can test this hypothesis) Evaluation techniques should encompass the corrective techniques to empower the learner to know why he or she is wrong ..and on what ground the write answer is the suitable answer...The better clarifications on this makes learner more empowered with required knowledge and skill sets. Some of the online learnings are having these techniques in it. Flexible learning opportunities attracts learners attention. International validity may be another criteria liked by online learners. When it comes to cost benefit analysis , relatively online learning is more cost effective.

Supplying regular and meaningful feedback stands out as a crucial element in spurring student motivation and involvement. In the realm of online learning, feedback serves as a compass for students, enabling them to track their progress, recognize strengths and areas for improvement, and enhance their skills and knowledge. The avenues for delivering feedback are diverse, encompassing quizzes, assignments, peer reviews, rubrics, surveys, and comments. The efficacy of feedback hinges on its timeliness, specificity, constructive nature, and actionable insights, fostering an environment where students not only absorb insights into their learning but also apply these lessons to forthcoming tasks.

There is a need for online platforms to further develop meaningful feedback, especially with Math and Science subjects. Online platforms have a great potential to shape how students develop in these subjects. When feedback helps students identify their misconceptions or frequent mistakes with gentle ideas on how to overcome these, the platform provides an opportunity for a student to learn without fear of failure.

From my perspective as someone involved in education, online learning platforms can motivate and engage students by offering real-world applications of what they're learning. Showing students how the concepts they're studying apply to real-life scenarios can spark their interest and make the material more relevant. This approach helps them see the value in their education beyond just passing tests or completing assignments. Additionally, providing opportunities for collaborative learning, even in an online setting, can enhance engagement. When students work together on projects or discussions, they're more likely to feel a part of a learning community, which can be incredibly motivating.

Feedback in online platforms is going to evolve faster than ever due to advances in Artificial Intelligence. When a platform begins to amass vast data from an increasingly large pool of users, the AI will get better and better at suggesting/prescribing the next learning steps, academic supportive measures or acceleration/challenges. Also, if learning style and preference surveys generate accurate data, the AI, over time will be able to select a more optimal modality or approach to help a student learn that is connected their individual learner tendencies.

Online platforms provide so many resources that weren't present in education a short while ago. I absolutely love providing instant feedback to students. This creates an opportunity for the student to make corrections instantly. Platforms that allow for discussion boards also allow students to provide feedback to each other. When doing this, I always start by establishing norms so that students understand how to provide constructive and actionable feedback to each other.

As someone involved in online education, I believe creating a sense of community and interaction is key. Setting up online forums where students can chat and share ideas helps them feel connected. Group projects are great too, as they get students working and learning together. Regular video meetings make things more personal and engaging. I also like the idea of students helping each other learn, like in study groups. Adding fun elements like quizzes and polls to courses can make learning more interactive. Personal messages from teachers to students can make them feel valued. Social media groups for the class can also keep everyone connected.

In my experience, students have shared that they feel more comfortable learning through discussing in small groups rather than being asked on spot by an instructor to speak to the big group. So, I would use the breakout function of Zoom to create small groups, give them a discussion prompt, after about five minutesI join each of the small groups to see how they are doing, then we would all meet in the main room to share ideas collectively. This approach proved successful in my classes

Regularly providing students with feedback on their progress and achievements can help them stay motivated. Clear progress indicators, performance statistics, and constructive feedback can give students a sense of accomplishment and guide their learning journey.

Sincere student engagement and the resulting community interaction are directly connected. First the content/presentation/challenge, must be motivating for the student to engage. Research shows that choice is the simplest way to enhance motivation and hence engagement. The student to student and/or student to teacher interaction tools work in the service of how much the student is authentically interested or engaged with any learning content. If the learning platform can refine how to group and connect types of learners to create an optimal group/peer interaction that is positive, the students will feel they belong, and long to engage the other online learners about the content of the course.

As a current classroom teacher, I strongly agree that online learning platforms, when used correctly, can create a sense of community. Creating opportunities for group work, discussion boards, and projects encourages students to work together to reach a common goal.

Choice and personalization in the gymnasium, physical classroom, online classroom, or place of work is what is motivating to all. Choice is driven by personal interest or values. Ones sense of autonomy and self-determination is encouraged with the simple creation of "choice." The more options a student encounters, the more ownership the learner will feel. Focus, effort, and success are soon to follow.

My scholars love the choice approach in reference to online platforms. I always give student a choice of 3 or 4 platforms to enhance skills as well as provide mini lessons on newly taught topics. The needs are always considered in the availability of options. The choices should be fun and relative to a game they normally play this helps with engagement
