The literature is rather consistent (see the research and books of Dan Pink or Jonah Berger, for example, both of whom have appeared at my events) showing that executives make important decisions based on peer-level discussions and referrals. We all do, for doctors, or vacation sites, or schools. Hence, ask people who are at significant levels and provide you with accolades for specific referrals, by name and/or title (never: "Can you give me three names?). That's how to expand your business. No one cares about ratings on "smile sheets." They care about peers they trust who recommend your services.

If you remember the steps and time you took to learn to drive or ride a bike, you will remember hitting the accelerator by mistake when braking, and other things you did wrong. Eventually you learned how to drive a large piece of metal with four wheels, you trained your brain by learning from your mistakes. Learning from your mistakes is imperative for a growth mindset, for leadership. Feedback on a mistake is a gift to hone your adaptability, willingness to learn and rewire your brain into a new way of being. As you continuously embrace positive or negative feedback without taking it personally, you will discover how adept you are in your personal growth and accomplishment, which builds confidence and self-esteem.

Criticism and critique never feel good but if you remember that it’s all about growth and not failure, you will be able to accept positive and negative feedback a little easier. That being said, sometimes people say things in anger or for other reasons. Be mindful that even with such responses, there can be useful information you could use for your evolution.
