Demonstrate that you are really interested in learning. When join a company as an intern, your professional experience is probably low, so the best you can do is to learn as much as you can. Whan I was an intern, there was a training program and I stongly focused on learning its contents. As I finished the steps before the deadline, I could use the free time to learning additional contents (there were lots of manuals available). In the end, my performance during training program was considered positive by the company and I was hired as a technical support analyst.

Ask questions and learn about the organization and the company to look for ways to add value. Do what you can to get the most out of your short time and build networks and friendhips.

Based on my experience with interns, an intern with the following characteristics would really leave a lasting impression on me - good theoretical and practical knowledge from their studies, genuine enthusiasm and curiosity for learning, a positive attitude towards technical challenges, an in-depth understanding of the problem statement/work assigned, understanding where and who will use and the impact to end users of any flaws in their solution, asking thoughtful and insightful questions instead of making assumptions, tackling problems methodically, exploring multiple solutions, being candid about strengths and limitations of their technical solutions, the ability to explain their work clearly, and a preference for working from the office!
To impress your supervisors, focus on mastering the skills relevant to your IT internship. Whether it's developing proficiency in a programming language like Java or understanding network troubleshooting, take the time to delve deeply into these areas. If your role involves technical support, ensure you're familiar with the common issues and how to resolve them efficiently. Work to be a master in the subjects you are related to. A significant effort is required to study and in the beginning it may difficult to be familiarized with new definitions or concepts, but once you progress in the learning path, things will become much more familiar and natural to you. When I was a trainee, there was a magazine named "Byte", whose contents were very technical and I had some difficulty to understand the articles written on it. As time went by and I continuously studied technical subjects, I realized that it became easier and easier to understand the articles in the magazine, and it became one of my favourites readings. The same may apply to the subjects in your job.

Learning doesn't stop when you have finished a course of study. It is an on-going process. Technology is continuing to change and evolve. Take on the role of a continuous learner, by taking advantage of any IT learning opportunities offered during your internship. Join relevant professional organizations and subscribe to their newsletters, look for online free training opportunities to deepen your knowledge base. Take notes when a colleague or supervisor is showing you something and look for opportunities to implement what you have been shown.

During my decades of work in the IT arena, I have identified one thing that can diminish potential employment opportunities: clear, concise, simple communication. When interfacing with your "customers" they don't care how "smart" you are. They do care that their issue is resolved AND that you can answer any questions they ask regarding what happened and how they can avoid the issue in the future. Using technical jargon that is over their head makes you look like a smart aleck. Using overly simplified language insults their intelligence. Using clear, descriptive language is the best approach to communicating. This shows your respect for the person as an equal and conveys your knowledge in a way in which it can be received.
The tech world is dynamic, with new challenges arising frequently. As an intern, displaying adaptability by embracing change and quickly learning new technologies or systems will set you apart. If your team decides to implement a new software tool, take the initiative to learn it inside out and become the go-to person for any queries. This shows that you're not just there to gain experience but also to contribute meaningfully during your tenure.

I found in most situations if you can adapt with your environment it always has a positive effect in the long run. Try your best to learn on the go and take the time to ask questions if they arise, remember you’re there to learn and grow so don’t be scared to do so! There will be times when I situation does not go to plan and might throw you through a loop , in these moments is where you have the opportunity to show your problem solving skills! Be willing to go the extra mile. It will serve you well in the long run. Volunteer for the new project, be willing to learn a different way to approach a task, use existing knowledge to support learning something totally brand new.

If you come across a bug in the code or a security vulnerability, research potential fixes and present them to your supervisor. Even if your solutions aren't used, the fact that you're thinking critically and attempting to solve issues proactively will leave a positive impression.

As a Director, I loved it when my staff approached me with a problem, followed by a potential solution. That put us on equal footing relative to the issue. I was now a team member collaborating with a fellow team member. 99% of the time, I went with the offered solution. If you want to impress, don't just present the problem, do your research and come to the table with a viable solution.

Observe the daily activities in your department and try to identify potential improvements where you can contribute. When I was a trainee, there was a technical bulletin published regularly by the headquarters that was distributed only in printed version. Everyone in the department had to read it and in the end it was archived in a library. When someone needed to search something in the bulletins, it was necessary to handle with a lot of paper until the information was found. In order to improve the scenario, I developed a system in mainframe that cataloged all the technical bulletins. This system was available to all system engineers, making it much easier for them to search the information needed.

As an intern, you may not offer solutions all the time, but when the solutions are offered by other team members, remember how that was resolved. When things are going out of your view and getting resolved, follow up and understand how that was resolved. This is how you connect with your experts and it will show your involvement.
Lastly, networking within your company is crucial for making a lasting impression. Attend company events, engage with colleagues from different departments, and seek mentorship from experienced IT professionals. Building relationships and showing genuine interest in others' work can open doors to opportunities within and beyond your internship. Your supervisors will take note of your efforts to integrate into the company culture and connect with the team.

When you are an intern and your professional career is just starting, your network is virtually zero. In order to grow your network, try as much as possible to establish contact with other collegues in different departments. Lunch time or company events are good opportunities for this. As your start establishing new connections, ask such connections to help you to contact new people. This is not a short process, but if you insist, the chances of success are high.

It may not be that easy to get a chance as intern or trainee in a good company, so if you are among the selected ones, take this unique opportunity to learn and grow! Dedicate yourself to study as much as you can about the subjects related to your department and your company, don't hesitate to offer help whenever you have an opportunity, be creative to identify potential improvements, be available and show you are really committed. You are probably in the beginning of your career, and if are successful in showing differentiators, your potential and chances to grow will be much bigger.
