The most important prerequisite to curiosity is suspension of judgment. Implicit bias and snap judgments can create barriers before folks even get a chance to step into the journey of curiosity if they’re not acknowledged and unpacked. Adding “I wonder” or “I worry” to the beginning of a thought can help translate them from judgment to curiosity. For example: I worry that this employee may be using their disability as a cop-out, and I wonder what that fear has to do with me and how I see myself. I wonder what this employee needs to feel supported to the point where their work flows are fully accessible to them, and I worry that I won’t be able to meet their needs. The embrace of curiosity begins with conscious suspension of judgment.
