The Importance Of Inclusion In Schools I'll never forget the first day of my teaching internship. It was Thursday January 19th 2017 and my life has never been the same. I arrived to school very early and nervous. I was welcomed to the front desk by two very kind staff members and as I waited on the principal was also welcomed and greeted by many members of the staff. This really gave me a boost and made me realize how being inclusive can change a day! I made it my goal that day to help every student feel included and cared for. I always greet students with kind words and positive messages. In addition, I use tiered learned and group activities to allow each child to be active, invloved and included.

Active engagement takes a lot of forms. My trick? Simple, humor 😄 Memory is a part of the brain, a part that, believe it or not, is triggered by emotion. Think about it, the funniest stories are the ones we most remember, when hanging out with friends, having a beer, they are the ones that keep coming up. If you can make your learners laugh, you just became unforgettable!

If you don’t stay actively engaged, you'll be like a man who fell off of his horse in a windstorm, left in the dust… As fast as technology is changing, if you snooze, you lose. If you know what's going on, people will come to you for help and advice.

One thing people often forget: ask. I can not tell you how frequently my classroom was treated to zooms with authors, scientists, artists, etc. just because I sent a polite email asking, "Would you be willing to talk to my class?" It was that simple and the result was having students see how "important" people were just like them at some point in their lives. Those experiences then opened up worlds of possibilities for my students.

It doesn't really take much effort to find problems, so you have a choice. You can either be a part of the problem, or a part of the solution. If you don't know the solution, do your best to find someone who does. That's another reason networking is important.
