Voice is your personality on the page. “How we write and how we talk is how we define ourselves,” says author William Zinsser. How do you want to come across on the page? Know yourself and your goal first. Like anything else, you get to know something by spending time with it. Write often - just for practice. The more you write, the more you'll start to see a style/tone emerge. You can ask yourself what the goal is behind a particular piece of writing. Is it to convince a reader of something? If so, then maybe you'll want to take on an authoritative tone. Is it to make a reader laugh? If so, then a more lighthearted tone may be in order. Know yourself and know your goal. Then, bring the two together. CLARITY SIMPLICITY BREVITY HUMANITY

Self-awareness is the result of constant failure. In other words, nobody can learn how to swim without getting wet. Having said this, it is crucial that you know that there's nobody else in this world and therefore the way you see the world is unique. Make sure that you learn to dedicate part of your work to write with complete freedom. Leave the editing for another moment.

In my own opinion, tone comes from an experimentation process. Once you have tested different tones for the same message, you can make sure you're on the right track.

As a writer, find a specific niche for a specific audience to grow in that space. It wouldn't make sense to be an NFL writer, but then you write more NBA content as it'll diversify and split your audience. The best advice is to stick to one thing and be known in that space for that one thing. It's the best way to stand out and show your audience you are an expert on the topic you write about and not just writing about anything and everything.
