One thing I’ve found helpful with writing is accepting my imperfections. I always dwell on the i’s not doted and the t’s not crossed, the punctuations not used rightly and the adjoining phrases not well put. I am an over-thinker and always want to be perfect in business communications most especially, thinking of what the reader perceives of my writing. She couldn't afford to buy them, so she just sat there reading and studying them. She studied how the author opened the story, how they built suspense, what made her want to keep reading, word choice, etc.. Then she took what she learned and started writing. Talk about mindful reading! Colleen Hoover built what has become a massively bestselling writing career simply by reading mindfully and applying what she learned to her own writing. For a writer, this is gold. This should be what we're taught to do to become good writers.

To be a successful author, you need to develop a thick skin. Everyone is going to have an opinion about your writing, and a lot of those opinions will be harsh, personal, and even vicious. For example, one book review I received went so far as to say that if the reviewer knew where I lived, they would come to my house and break both of my hands so I could never write another word. These types of reviews happen. You need to expect them. Expecting them lessens their impact later, because you already know they're coming. And when they come, you need to dust them off like they're nothing more than salt that got on your clothes. Better yet, don't even read your reviews. They're not for you, anyway.

If you've never tried writing in present tense, give it a try. Even if it's not for you, commit to writing one short story in the present tense just to see how it feels. While you don't have to use present tense in everything you write, you may find that it helps shake off some of the cobwebs when it comes to planning your writing. Present tense has a funny way of making all writing sound more immediate, and clearing the path for your mind to come up with new ideas.
