Hey everyone! In 2020, I started playing around with video editing as a hobby. It took off, and now I work with awesome clients and companies. Looking back, I've learned you don't have to stick to one type of content right away. Success in editing is about infusing your personality, your humor, your perspective, into your work. Whether you're starting out or leveling up, stay true to yourself and enjoy the ride!

I think it will be useful to continuously learn new software, techniques, and industry trends. Network with professionals, join relevant communities, and be willing to take on small projects to build your reputation. With dedication and a proactive mindset, you can overcome the lack of experience and establish a successful video production career.

If you want a career in video production, you need to create content. Even if the only camera you have is your cell phone, use it to shoot and edit videos. Practice, practice, practice. Produce videos for friends, local bands, schools ---- you can do this for free to give yourself experience. I've had several students volunteer at school, their church or community to film and edit. Many of these students went on to being hired or even creating their own video businesses. Get out there and create - that's step #1.

Remember editing is not just editing bits and pieces. You are creating a beautiful story will small pieces and narrating someones POV to audience with a feel of sound and colour. "learn-Practise-Master" is a mantra.

Only you can do you:) and when you shine in your own special way everyone can see it! So now all is left is to go put there and create awesome videos!

The most important thing to do when getting started in video is not to ask for permission but rather to realise that no one has your voice. You have a story to tell and that is your mission, there is no wax on wax off recipe to success but fall in love with the process of filmmaking and I guarantee you they'll study your meteoric rise in schools you couldn't afford to attend. Spec work has been the gate to paid work since the beginning of time . Film students create spec work to learn, but often also to get their first jobs right after school. No one wants to hire you for something you haven’t done before, so you need to alleviate their fears, reduce the risk, they’ll have going with you by showing them you can make something amazing right out of the gate.

Hands down the best networking to do is at your local film festival. You'll meet all kinds of film pros at all stages of their careers, their artistry and creativity will get your ideas flowing, and, they'll be very glad to see you, especially if you can lend a hand with something. There are tiny film festivals out there who punch way above their weight with the quality of the connections they have. Go and help out and meet a few.

And then ask questions when you feel appropriate, everyone on set started where you are, and most are excited to help the next generation.

Whoa Nelly. A bit of caution is needed here. There is a fine line between 'showing willing' and being exploited to do free work on the promise of something that never materializes. Be very clear about what you're willing to do for nothing; how much time, expectation of finished work, etc., and be clear on what you do want from it; a written recommendation? A paid internship? What? A reputable or professional outfit will respect boundaries. Sadly there are lot of folk who still think that something obtained for free has no value, so just have the confidence to set guidelines and expectations if you're going to work for no money. People might be against volunteering or giving their time for free when starting a career. It can feel like a lot of work, but go in with a plan, and you'll get a lot out of it. First, you're looking for professional experience, so be professional throughout. Send clear, simple, professional emails or connect with people on LinkedIn. During your experience, remember the key word is 'work'. Be proactive. Stay busy, ask questions, and be useful. Provide value by showing initiative and a willingness to learn. Do a good job and make sure you ask for a review or testimonial to help you land your next role. Remember, every expert started as a beginner. Stay dedicated, and you'll soon conquer the lack of experience.

Doing work for free is always a dicey topic but I believe there's a big space for it when you're just starting out. It's helped me get to where I am today and I'm sure it has for a lot of others as well! Put your pride aside, if you want to take this career seriously but you've got no experience, then it's a good option in my opinion. Only one way to learn.

You know how to stay not just up to date with video but ahead of the curve of most video pros? It's easy... Actually bother to read / watch the 'state of video' or current trends reports that all the big video platforms publish every year. I can't count the number of video pros who never, ever bother to do this and just stick to doing what they've always done. Post pandemic, video is changing massively, and quickly, so you need to stay up-to-date. Read the reports going back as far as 2020/21 when the first fallout from the pandemic was being analyzed. It's incredibly important. Plus, it's usually a cracking read.

When you are early on in your career embrace the fact that you might do things a little differently. Working in video production, it's important for you to forge your own path. Sure there are right and wrong ways to do things, but as a beginner you offer a fresh perspective that the veterans no longer have. Through the years you'll gain the necessary experience to do the job well. Question things, figure them out, push back sometimes. You have a lot of value to bring to the table even if you don't always know how or why something is done a certain way.

Video and film are visual languages, either nothing has meaning or everything has meaning. Call me an optimism but I prefer the latter and it makes for better art. And yes, that seemingly boring talking head video that your corporate slave master asked you to do can be done artfully. Just like any language there are dialects, nuance, slang, colloquialisms. Find your style and you will find your audience the longer you "talk" the talk, yo! No cap (Am I using this right?)
