Risk identification is the first step of five steps of risk assessment as per UK health & safety process. Identifying risks in the workplace involves several key steps. Begin with a thorough walkthrough to inspect and pinpoint potential hazards, such as physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial, and environmental dangers. Engage employees to gather insights about any hazards they have encountered. Review past incident reports and near-miss data to identify recurring issues. Assess the likelihood and severity of identified hazards to prioritize risks, focusing on the most serious ones first. Effective risk identification requires continuous monitoring and active involvement from all levels of the organization.

Conceptualmente lo que se identifican son los Peligros, a través de la fuente o situación, salvo que el concepto de Riesgo tenga otra acepción o interpretación de la palabra RISK. Dicho lo anterior, en mi experiencia profesional, los peligros se pueden identificar correctamente cuando se forma en el ejecutante de una tarea, la evaluación crítica del entorno, sus condiciones ambientales, de los equipos y herramientas que se ocuparán, del estado físico y concentración que tenga el ejecutante, presencia de otras tareas o equipos en el área. Cuando la tarea migra de lo no rutinario a lo rutinario, el ejecutante subestima los peligros, aun cuando haga la misma tarea, en un día distinto o en un área distinta. La monotonía es el verdadero PELIGRO.

One of the things that I find the most useful is to get everyone in the room together, technical, management etc, so all initial questions can be answered-the more the merrier! The use of the 'Impact v Effort matrix, or also known as the 'Action Priority' matrix. Here you are not trying to complicate things and find intricate solutions, simply see what solutions are fill ins, or larger project, or quick wins or pointless tasks. By having everyone in the room together, they might be able to offer insight into wider, technical or any other useful insights that may contribute to how well a task will be received or carried out or even, possible. Importantly, communicate this boundary before starting so the team can act openly and transparently.

En el ámbito laboral, los ejecutantes efectivamente tienden a ser muy creativos en las soluciones, por lo que, siempre se les debe estimular a que compartan sus ideas, incluso de forma práctica. Sin embargo, no se debe descuidar el hecho de que estas soluciones puede que no tengan una correcta evaluación de los riesgos y sólo se concentre en resolver la problemática. Dicho lo anterior, todas las ideas deben ser sometidas a un exhaustivo análisis para determinar si en su ejecución operativa tiene contemplados los aspectos de seguridad. Este análisis debe ser consensuado entre los que proponen las ideas, los Supervisores y los Asesores en Prevención, para que se aborde de manera integral cada propuesta.

There could be multiple ways to skin the cat.. same here, there are multiple ways to implement the control measure. Involve the workforce in the conversation and address the challenges to carry an incident and injury-free workplace.

When implementing the changes, please ensure everyone is trained on the process. Then, it would be easy to implement any control measures. Continued process without getting complacent will help us to drive a positive safety culture and bring the result to the workplace.

Measuring the effectiveness of safety interventions is essential. Track metrics such as incident rates, employee feedback, and compliance levels. This ongoing evaluation ensures continual improvement in workplace safety. By monitoring these metrics, you can identify areas needing adjustment or enhancement. Remember, workplace safety is a dynamic process that requires constant vigilance and adaptation to maintain effectiveness and relevance.

Con respecto a la evaluación del impacto, el seguimiento que debe realizar el Supervisor a través de las Observaciones Operacionales, serán una potente herramienta para determinar si existen desviaciones en la ejecución ya sea por falta de información, formación comprensión o un error del ejecutante. El ser humano cometerá errores, es parte de nuestra naturaleza y el ejecutante tenderá a realizar el mínimo esfuerzo en la ejecución y si eso no es observado por el Supervisor, puede que la solución entregue un impacto negativo, generando incluso una frustración en el equipo de trabajo. Las Observaciones Operacionales permitirán acumular una base de datos para corregir las desviaciones, fortalecer las conductas positivas y una mejora continua.
