Excelling at both means you must not only present yourself well but also back it up with substantial expertise and innovative ideas.

There’s always a temptation amongst people on LinkedIn that they need to write and create in a particular style. You know the type. Single line sentences. Atypical structure of problem, elaboration, solution, and CTA. It might be effective but it comes across as incredibly inauthentic. The people who follow you want to hear how YOU express yourself on the daily. They don’t want to see a made-up self. You would want to see inauthenticity. Personal brand is about vulnerability. If you can’t afford that, then there’s no brand to talk about.

Too many folks are focused on the content creation aspect of personal branding rather than the emotional mindset of wanting to help others. For example, I am a strong people person, being a former teacher, and my mission is to lower global suicide rates by 30% by the year 2030. The content I produce around that does not really matter—as who I am underneath portrays the personality I have when meeting folks face to face. The camera cannot capture all the traits of an individual.

In other words, you work on thought leadership, personal branding is getting created. You work on personal branding, people start seeing thought leadership in you.
