You've just networked at an event. How can you use social media to boost your job search efforts?

Make sure that you connect with everybody that you meet at a networking event. During your job search, I recommend that you take advantage of some kind of free CRM and be sure that you’re following up with people in a way that is not overwhelming and will keep you top of mind when the right thing comes along.

If you are collecting cards at an event. Go right to Linkedin after the event and say hello to everyone. If you are using the LI QR code feature here's an amazing trick. Use a code word for the event in your message when you connect with them (WITH NOTE) there. For example: Use the name of the venue. You likely don't have that word in your Linkedin messages outside of this event. Then when you go back to follow up, just search that venue name, and now you have a whole cohort of contacts that you won't forget to reconnect with.

LinkedIn Follow-Up: Connect Promptly:👉 After the event, immediately connect with new contacts on LinkedIn. Personalize your invitation by mentioning your conversation to reinforce the connection. Engage with Content:👉 Like, comment, and share their posts. This keeps you visible in their network and shows your active interest in the industry. Share Your Experience:👉 Post about the event, highlighting insights or takeaways. This showcases your involvement and expertise to your broader network.

There's is not a better time than during a job search to start creating content about something that you are passionate about. You have time. You have a goal. Mkae it your daily practice. IF YOU AREN'T THE TYOE TO POST: try it anyway. If you really can't get into it, try posting and engaging in relevant and interesting conversations on other peoples posts. It's generous and it's what linkedin wants to see happening. (Which always helps with exposure)

After networking at an event, utilize social media to supercharge your job search. Craft compelling content that embodies your professional brand and expertise. Whether it's insightful blog posts, engaging infographics, or informative videos, showcase your skills and knowledge. By sharing polished content across your social channels, you'll capture the interest of recruiters and hiring managers, setting yourself apart in the competitive job market.

Consistent Photo:➡️ Use the same professional headshot on all platforms. Stay Active:➡️ Post regularly about industry news and your projects. This will help you make a good impression when event contacts check your profiles.

Be sure not to go in hard with a big ask. DM's follw the normal rules of etiquette. Do not automate at this time and be deliberate in your outreach. Be sure that you are putting your best foot forward and maintain positivity. The best way to be offered a potential job is to ask for great advice. The best way to be offered advise is to ask for a job (randomly and when it isn't expected).

‘Social Media’ - a word that’s very commonly used but it is the term that’s one of the most powerful words on the planet! Market yourself, networking is not just meeting people at an event, it’s a follow up that you make post event. It’s a long standing commitment and communication you compose. Staying connected by sending a DM, congratulating them on achievements, posting interactive content on your channel will help you a lot in staying engaged with them.

Be considerate in your approach. For example, if you meet Bob at an event and he mentions X, Y, and Z, send Bob a direct message (DM) to thank him for his time and insight into one of the topics he mentioned. Ideally, choose the topic that aligns the most with your personal objectives. Leave it at that. No ask, no pitch, just a nice note. After sending the DM, follow up with a connection request. Some people recommend sending a blank connection request, while others suggest personalizing it. This comes down to personal preference. If you can personalize it in one sentence, that's the approach I would recommend leaning towards.

Send personalized thank-you notes to individuals you connected with via social media’s direct messaging features. This gesture shows appreciation for their time and helps strengthen the relationship. Be concise and respectful of their time, expressing genuine interest in continuing the conversation. If appropriate, suggest a follow-up meeting or call to discuss potential opportunities or shared interests further.

In my experience with LinkedIn, it has been the relationships, not the resumes and job applications, which have produced professional results. The others are important, to be sure, but establishing trust, finding common professional, and sometimes personal, ground are the core components of successful job finding adventures.
