Be a student! In trying to address student conflicts it may be more appealing for you to imagine or put yourself in the shoes of a student. That first step gives you a better understanding of the issues that would have arisen. By allowing yourself to be a student, not only do you understand what issue is at hand but you also imagine what type of solution you would be expecting from the mediation, this will aid in you offering an informed impartial mutually acceptable solution as you would have meditated that if you were a student you would feel the justice served in your solution.

One thing I’ve found to be important when you want to build relationships with students is to not call them out in front of the class. Make it a normal practice to have students step aside or step out before you begin to talk about issues coming up. This often allows students (especially middle/high school) the chance to speak freely. This goes a long way to ensuring positive rapport with students and allows you, as the educator, a chance to bring solutions and empathy directly to the student while showing you are listening.
