In military aviation we call this preparation "mental flight" where you project, in all phases of the flight, what errors could happen and the possible solutions for each adversity. The more detailed the mental flight, the more prepared you will be to carry out your tasks.

When I was younger and my Dad was teaching me to drive, he would tell me 'Never let your car go somewhere your brain hasn't already been.' Flight planning is more than just drawing a line on chart, or plotting a course in the FMC. It's thinking about where you're going, what you're going to encounter on the flight, terrain, weather and any potential worst case scenario.
