For example, a joke about a character from a popular TV show like "Friends" may not make sense to someone who hasn’t seen the show. Translators need to find equivalent references in the target culture that evoke the same recognition and emotional response. Historical Events: Historical events can be a rich source of humor, but these jokes require the audience to have a certain level of knowledge about the events. For instance, a joke about the Boston Tea Party would need to be replaced with a similar historical event that is well-known in the target culture.

Understanding cultural context is crucial in translating humor and sarcasm. It's about more than words—it's the shared experiences and knowledge that give those words meaning. For instance, in Nigeria, white symbolizes happiness, while in many Western cultures, it signifies mourning. Translators must navigate these differences to ensure the target audience grasps the original sentiment. Similarly, idioms often don't translate literally. For example, the English phrase "kick the bucket" can't be translated literally into Hausa, as it would convey a different meaning. Striking a balance between fidelity and relatability ensures the translation resonates culturally, preserving the original's impact and nuance.

Well, it's not uncommon to face this kind of situation.In fiction is common to see humor, sarcasm, poetry and rhymes.One thing that is essential understands the meaning and the central idea. It will not always will have the same meaning but certainly can say 'almost' the same. In different languages you need to sound like you are a native speaker. So, you need to focus in the cultural context and how to say the idea in other words.

Of course in the translation of a sentence containing humor and/or sarcasm, the translator must always consider first the meaning/aim of the sentence in the original language, then try to find a correct humorous or sarcastic phrase/idiom to convey the same meaning in the target language. Thus, word-by-word translation should be avoided at all costs in such translations. Localization should be applied where possible to make the joke/ sarcastic comment more understandable by the target audience.

Most TV shows have their jokes written in a language and for a specific country where the cultural references resonate to the majority of the people, and thus they get the joke. I see how there are times where you need to find the equivalent cultural reference in the other country so that everyone gets the idea in another language.

When you're translating into another language, you need to take into account all the situations where there are puns or double entendres. I think those would be the hardest to translate into another language because it's safer to think that translating them literally into the other language won't get you the same meaning. I can see this happening with people translating a comedy movie where the main source of comedy is wordplay.

To make the intended message from the original source as clear as possible, one must do a quick mental search for equivalent characters or objects related to the topic within the target culture and arrange them to "make sense" for the receiver.

There are plenty of jokes or sarcastic situations that can't be translated literally. In a way, it seems to be easier to get to a equivalent on the fly than trying to translate them. Sure, it might not be the most faithful translation, but this is one of the cases where it's preferable to preserve the meaning or the intention of the joke, rather than just translating them literally.
