As an LP, you want to understand a number of attributes about a private equity GP: 1) historical track record, especially realized returns (vs. only unrealized returns on “paper”) 2) benchmark performance vs. peer firms in the vintage. E.g. how did other 2014 funds perform? 3) benchmark the GPs deals vs. similar deals across size, vintage, sector, etc. 4) understand the GP’s value creation playbook - what levers does the GP pull to generate alpha? 5) how much of the GP’s returns can be attributed to alpha from executing the investment thesis… vs. market beta, the rising tide that lifts all boats”? 6) is the GP’s value creation playbook a repeatable process that can be leveraged to drive returns in future deals?

Operational Synergies- Quantifying the synergies and the added value through PE investment is the most challenging task. Putting right metrics in Pre and post PE investment cashflows is very critical to arrive at a fair valuation. Base Assumptions - Forecasting and projecting free cash flows takes into account certain assumptions which have to be accurately considered. These assumptions depend on historical data, current industry performance, etc and form the basis of financial model. Sensitivity - Assessing the financial performance of company by changing metrics and its impact on the overall valuation Scenario - financial models have to be calibrated as per different operational scenarios.
