What is your experience with personalized learning, and how can you improve it?

I've seen personalized learning bloom from a budding concept to a vibrant field. It's like taking a dusty textbook and turning it into a holographic learning adventure! But even the brightest stars have room to shine even brighter.

I am not sure if I like the definition of "Personalized Learning" in general. It does not mean that we have to tailor everything to fit the student's needs. That is more crippling then encouraging. Rather, see the patterns and understand the likes and dislikes of the student. Personalize it by exciting the students about their future and to be great, you got to do the things you do not like sometimes too. Work on the strengths and encourage effort in the weaknesses too.

To be successful with personalized/tailored learning strategies, one should establish a strong bond with the students, when trust is real and evident, then the outcome will be highly satisfying.

Enseñar desde la comprensión de la individualidad permite explorar estrategias que normalmente no serían efectivas para un grupo; en efecto, es un reto para quien enseña, pero trae grandes resultados si se aplica de forma adecuada, pues brinda al estudiante un proceso más cómodo, que no solo es efectivo para su desarrollo de competencias y apropiación del conocimiento, sino que lo motiva a continuar su proceso de crecimiento tanto personal como académico. El aprendizaje personalizado es además una alternativa crucial para catalizar las aptitudes de quienes manifiestan capacidades diversas y atípicas, es un camino a la dignificación de quienes, en otras condiciones, quedarían marginados.

As a professor who implemented ALEKS Math for personalized learning, I've seen firsthand its impact on student engagement and understanding. Personalized learning through ALEKS allows students to focus on topics that align with their need and strenghts, significantly boosting motivation and interest. This tailored approach resulted in students actively reflecting on their progress. By connecting new concepts to their existing knowledge, students achieve better retention and transfer of information. This strategy not only fosters a more inclusive learning environment but also promotes deeper, more meaningful learning experiences for each student. This was reflected in students retention and academic achievement.

Each student has a long list of interests, abilities, learning styles, and learning needs. Establishing strategies that are adequate and inclusive for all students, considering their particularities, contexts, and needs, becomes essential. These tools help transform classrooms and learning environments into comfortable and pleasant spaces that promote curiosity, self-confidence, meaningful learning, and more in each student.

A considerable challenge faced by systems implementing personalized learning pathways was underestimating importance of students’ social and emotional skills. Many systems that have undergone this process have come to understand that students differ in their abilities for self-regulation, motivation, and other skills necessary for personalized learning to be effective. I would love to do more personalized learning. Time… time… time… is my personal greatest challenge. I prioritize knowing my students well, forging relationships, then I focus on how to get the best out of the most. I hate the lack of ability to push my highest kids and pull up my lowest kids, but truly I do not have enough time. I am subbing classes, in meetings, planning, prepping, yadda yadda. Prioritize time, limit student numbers, those would help, but how do you do this in a national teaching shortage?

Personalized learning should consider the children's multiple intelligences and what they need to improve in regards to 21st century skills and social emotion learning. Teachers need a deep understanding of those intelligences and skills, and a treasure trove of tips to help foster them. AI today can save much time for teachers in updating lesson plans so they best suit learners' interests. Policy makers and educational leadership teams need to understand that by focusing on bringing the children and youth to educational results, the neglect of personal attention brought about anxiety and at-risk behaviors. So personalized learning is actually the short road taken.

Para mi, aprender es fácil. ¡A mi me encanta! Tengo la tenacidad para empezar, trabajar, y responder a las fechas de entrega el trabajo. A muchas personas les falta esta característica y por eso es difícil mantener un horario saludable. Es útil ofrecer puntos de revisar el progreso al ‘aprendiz’.

Personalized learning is crucial, especially for students facing temporary or permanent challenges in assimilating skills and competencies related to their grade level. I once had a student with mild intellectual disabilities, and I adapted activities by using simpler vocabulary and incorporating images with words to help her associate and grasp the content taught, fostering both reading skills and comprehension. Some students excel with oral methods. Through diagnostic assessments, we can set objectives and initiate tailored methods, which can be adjusted as needed along the way.
