What are some tips for adapting to new speaking environments?

Understanding your audience is like unlocking the secret to impactful communication. The best way to understand your audience is to connect with them. And here’s something that helps me do it- Sonder! Sonder, the realisation that each person has a rich, complex life, is a potent concept. As a speaker, embracing this realization transforms your perspective. It's acknowledging that your audience isn't just a faceless crowd but a tapestry of diverse experiences, ambitions, and emotions. This realization fosters empathy. & transforms your words from mere speech to a shared experience, making your message resonate profoundly with each member of your diverse audience.

Knowing your audience is really important. My hubby and I volunteered with a group of kids to lead worship once a week. One day we were earlier than usual. We were willing to wait until the time we normally started but one of the teachers called in the kids so we could start early. They were livid! From their faces and body language I knew they would not be receptive to the session. I told them we were going to start with a group game. I pulled 1 out of my teacher's hat. Even the staff played and in no time the children were smiling, laughing and their attitudes had improved. Then we went into the worship session and it went really well. When you know your audience you will know what mood they are in and how to adjust to suit.

Always, always keep your strengths handy. Here are the few simple and yet powerful things I do: - Prepare, prepare, prepare! - Step out there to 'offer' and not to receive. Unapologetically! - Make it all about the audience - Pause! Take time to listen. To not just the words spoken, but also listen to the body language of the audience - Be more than ok to pivot in the middle of the talk if the engagement reduces - Have a broad framework of the talk, but incorporate audience needs as it proceeds - Be all right to make mistakes, accept the mistake and move ahead. - Be clear!
