What do you do if your remote data engineering team is struggling to collaborate effectively?

In my exp. so far- Document project objectives, timelines and roles including integration sources, expected deliverables — Scope Definition: Clearly document project scope to manage expectations, prevent scope changes. Acceptance and Success Criteria: Define clear acceptance conditions for deliverable, measurable success criteria for project evaluation. Dependencies Identification: Identify and communicate internal & external dependencies impacting timelines. Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessment and develop proactive mitigation strategies. Stakeholder Alignment: Involve stakeholders for end goals n provide regular updates. Resource Allocation: Effectively allocate budget, resources & technology to support project goals.

Diverse team members often have varying interpretations of goals. Adopting methodologies like Scrum ensures a structured approach, fostering collective understanding and contribution. Regularly sharing the vision with stakeholders is crucial for project viability. Communicating consistently helps maintain accountability and focus.

To enhance collaboration in your remote data engineering team, focus on: 1. Sometimes it would be good idea to have 'Ask me anything' hours likely weekly/bi-weekly where in the team members can come with questions/challenges. These would great to have is via video conferencing so that you can share slides/diagrams etc. The leaders (tech/leadership) should be part of these sessions so that they can provide guidance/support.

One thing that I really liked in the past was to have some kind of open channel that everyone of the team can join anytime. This could be a daily Teams meeting and if you feel like it, you could just join it whenever you want and talk to other persons of your team.

Centralize documentation in a shared platform like Confluence enabling transparency & accountability.

Implementing collaborative tools such as Slack for real-time messaging, Zoom for meetings, and Jira or Trello for project deliverables tracking. Utilizing version control systems such as Git and Github, which is a collaborative coding platform. Common Mistakes: 1. Over-reliance on Email 2. Neglecting Training and Onboarding 3. Failing to Tailor Tools to Team Needs

It's important to be open and willing to help engineers (junior or not) who are blocked and need help. It always helps to get a second perspective, and establishing trusting relationships with other engineers will help them and you when you get stuck as well. And at the end of the day, if you don't help someone else and their code breaks, you may have to end up fixing it. Better to help during dev than when prod goes down.
