My 2 cents.. I was in sales leadership for too tree decades, and let me tell ya, those fancy real-time performance tracking incentives are great, but relying on pay-at-risk or variable comp sends the wrong message. It implies that top performance is optional, not expected. Instead, pay a fixed salary that puts your salesperson in the top percentile for the area. This way, you attract the best talent and set clear revenue goals that need to be hit within a certain timeframe to justify that salary. By doing this, you’re telling your team that high performance is the standard, not the exception.
