How do you manage morale on your agile team?

Esto incluye desde el saludo inicial, el tono de voz utilizado al comunicarse, la manera de pedir las cosas, hasta los gestos corporales. Estos aspectos pueden transmitir mucho sin que nos demos cuenta, afectando directamente la motivación del equipo. Es fundamental, por lo tanto, crear y mantener un ambiente donde se fomente la cortesía, el respeto y la empatía en todas las interacciones. Esto no solo mejora el clima laboral, sino que también fortalece la cohesión del equipo y contribuye a un ambiente de trabajo más positivo y productivo.

Communication is the key for effective product delivery through Agile. Above all, I focus on the feedback conversations which result in creating a safe communication space and results in transparent dialogue. Normally, the communication is only limited to the customer or stakeholders. I tend to involve the team as well. After all their value generation results in customer satisfaction.

Streamline as much information as possible! Single source appropriate information to reduce friction and miscommunications across all stakeholders and keep alignment clean and simple - extremely visible, and consistency is key. Your job is to keep it accurate, up-to-date, ensuring everyone has what they need and has the right opportunity to access it to get their job done and make the appropriate decisions, provide feedback, etc. Facilitate the right conversations and help people self-serve so that they don't have to dig or be confused and weed through a ton of stuff. Be the heartbeat.

First of all, it would be really nice, if agile leaders keep checking team mood. You can do it with simple 1 question: How do you feel about working in our team? (rate from 1 to 5). Then, take action accordingly.

Managing morale on an Agile team involves fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. I prioritize open communication, actively seeking and valuing team members' input. Recognizing achievements and celebrating milestones reinforces a sense of accomplishment. Empowering team members with autonomy and acknowledging their contributions cultivates a sense of ownership. Regular retrospectives allow for constructive feedback and continuous improvement, addressing challenges proactively. By promoting a culture of mutual respect, appreciation, and shared goals, morale is elevated, contributing to a motivated and high-performing Agile team.

While it is very important to recognize and appreciate your teams, it is also imperative that any failure the team encounters, there is a Safety Net around the team. Coach needs to bring in a culture of Psychological Safety around the leadership where teams feel empowered to take decisions without the Fear of Failure. One of the things as a Coach I do is courage teams to Celebrate Failure, i.e they learn on How not to do things and not repeat the same mistake again.

Public recognition is more meaningful than private recognition. I try recognizing team members at team meetings or company events which result in continuous team productivity.

Regularly acknowledge and celebrate individual and team achievements. Recognition boosts morale by validating efforts and reinforcing a positive team culture. Highlight the significance of contributions, whether big or small, and express gratitude for the collective dedication towards achieving project goals.

One of the definitions of leader is that they create more leaders. 'Enablement' is the key to this result. I tend to empower the team so that they can have better informed decisions in a self organizing environment.

Embracing mistakes as essential for learning, we relinquish excessive control, enabling our team to trust their abilities and succeed. Agile ways of working require servant leadership. Being a servant leader, however, isn't being a servant! Rather than leaping into action to handle your team's issues, be a resource for them to solve the problems themselves. By leaning harder into coaching competencies than direction, you can build autonomous and self-organizing teams.

Empower team members by providing them with the autonomy and resources needed to excel in their roles. Encourage self-organization and decision-making, allowing individuals to take ownership of their work. Provide the necessary training and support to enable continuous learning and skill development, fostering a sense of competence and confidence.

Keeping a positive morale, more so with remote teams, is linked how you connect with your team as a leader and how the teams connect within themselves. What helps most is to have that connect with your team at an individual level and fostering that environment within the team as well 1. Keep time aside to talk and connect about not work related things, get to know the team and their families 2. Ensure the team feels there is a safe space they can count on 3. Create opportunities to unwind eg. games, breaks, find new activities 4. Take interest in individuals growth and development 5. If your team is co-located consider going out for lunch, dinner, etc. 6. Never miss an opportunity to reward or recognize

It's about reminding everyone they're part of something bigger, a team working together to create something awesome! In my experience, I kick off my scrum ceremonies (excluding daily scrums) with five-minute icebreaker questions. This practice encourages team members to openly address issues rather than sweeping them under the rug, enabling us to resolve them proactively. It not only strengthens our connection but also maintains high team motivation.

I keep my focus to proactively weigh the pros and cons of different options and make the best decision for the team. Sometimes, I have to adapt myself during the projects but it is rewarding in the end.

We demonstrate our concern for one another by acknowledging each other's accomplishments, whether they are large or small, and providing assistance when required. These relationships foster a strong sense of teamwork, motivating everyone to take on any task as a group.
