How do you guarantee accurate test results?

Test one thing at a time. It seems obvious but it's easy to fall victim to time crunch and intuition and push a bunch of features simultaneously. Keep it simple, apples to apples, and consistent. Using programs like JMP to build your DOE can greatly simply generating a test plan, but do not lose track of the test goal. Better to run multiple straightforward tests whose results you understand than fewer complicated ones that only JMP really gets. You are the engineer and you are responsible.

Note the need to incorporate calibration features. These may be known (measured) friction coefficients, or elements designed to bend/fail as a measurable indication of true forces, stresses, or strains. To reduce inaccuracies, these elements should be designed prior to simulation and not determined after the fact.

Malfunctions can occur in the sensor, its cable and the data acquisition system and its digital filtering. A basic grasp of DSP (digital signal processing) can be a great help to increase your confidence it your results and hardware. Also, simple mathematical algorythms such as integration, differentiation and the fast fourrier transform can give you deeper insight to how your data is being acquired and that your test data is not breaking the laws of physics!

Documentation is an incredibly important state when reporting your results. Your tests and experiments must be repeatable and well-documented, so they can be communicated effectively.
