How can you use storytelling to make your writing engaging for seniors?

A way to motivate anyone is to make the story relatable based upon your audience. Not just seniors - anyone. Reach the person where they are and then move together to another level. Seniors are not like a box that can be stacked, they are, like everyone, intricate with different perspectives that are beautifully colored and real. Listen to their voice and move from there.

I typically do the following to engage seniors whenever I write something specifically for them: I include age-old wisdom phrases and/or tales. I support what I am writing with precise facts and statistics that pertain to the mainstream senior audience at large and to the subject matter being covered in the piece. I enjoy adding relevant quotations from reputable sources that I feel would resonate positively with seniors. I typically celebrate the knowledge, experience, gratitude, and wisdom that seniors bring to the table. As a senior myself, I love to incorporate true stories about my life and career that underscore my deep compassion and passion for the topic which I am writing about. And, I use humor and end on a positive note.

The reason storytelling is ruling the world is because it's embedded in the humankind. You cannot take away the human need to connect to other person's story. Hence the best way to engage all age groups is to evoke emotions. Make them feel your experience through words. It's possible and it works!

Humans support each other and thrive in the process. When I share my stories of living with hearing loss, I use humour to make them not only relatable but palatable. Seniors are struggling with the decline in the human body and mind and when they feel understood and supported, they will in turn support the message and even the products of the storyteller.

Why are we separating seniors from everyone else? Every human goes through trials and tribulations. We're all irrational, status-seeking, pattern-making creatures. Every epic story has a hero, a villain, and an appropriately tumultuous and surprising narrative arc that keeps readers engaged. Get your basics right, and everyone will appreciate your story—whether octogenarian or vicenarian (someone in their twenties).

There are some no-go areas and some must-use vocabularies when writing for seniors. No low-blows and cheap tactics. Don't sell. Seniors don't like people telling them what is right and what is wrong, they never want anyone to tell them what is good or bad for them.

Treat seniors firstly as intelligent humans. Don’t baby them. They have seen depressions and wars. They have resilience. Show respect for their age and experience and tap into their own agency and sovereignty. Treat them as you want to be treated

When I taught descriptive writing I would take the kids into the staff room to pop some popcorn. I gave them a chart showing the 5 senses and the kids came up with descriptive words that appealed to each sense as the popcorn was popping. So they'd say for example: Sight... Yellow, white, chunky Taste... Buttery, salty etc. When they wrote about the process instead of saying 'We made popcorn today' they could say 'We made delicious popcorn today that was so salty and buttery.' Giving details helps your audience to be present in your story and provides an opportunity for them to feel the emotions you're trying to convey.

Adding sensory details can take the reader into the heart of the scene. Include references to music from a certain era - musicians, song lyrics, concerts - to transport readers to a particular time (and place). Research has shown, that memories from the "reminiscence bubble" are particularly strong, so calling on those makes for powerful writing.

The role of Emotions and details in storytelling can be over-emphasized. One thing that makes people stay glued on your story is how your story drives them emotionally. Ensuring enough details in a story also helps your audience read through your story (i.e. giving facts and figures). Hence, a story needs to be full of details and emotions!!!

Emotions are what define storytelling. There is no story that doesn't evoke an emotion. Happiness, grief, anger, desire, and so on... it all boils down to what strikes a chord. Seniors have many lived experiences and for things to make sense to them, we need to be mature and real. They seek depth and meaning and their attentionspan is more than the youngsters. They come from an era where letters were written and they value long form content Keep your message crisp but details are welcome Repetition should be avoided as it makes the content monotonous Keep it fresh, mature and meaningful Real life > Reel life, any day!

How descriptive you are can make or break your story. Not only with seniors but with any generation. Seniors, however, come from a time where they could not always see the painting, so they relied on someone who had to paint a picture using their words. I myself was born to older parents. The people that I grew up around told some of the best stories! Listening to them was like watching a movie broadcasted by the television of your mind. Everyone would be so immersed, causing them to also be interactive. A good story is accompanied by an interjection or two when that generation is your audience. I said that to say, taking captive your readers or listeners is imperative. Without that ability the other skills are obsolete.

Start with a great hook line to immediately engage your reader. Every good story has an engaging plot twist. Development your characters so readers can expect the unexpected.

I'd suggest forgetting about writing 'for seniors' with all the assumptions that contains about who 'seniors' are, what they're capable of, interested in and instead write for people.

Moving from old information to new information creates a better flow. Repeating the old information at the beginning and adding new information at the end of paragraphs or sentences adds cohesion without the need for explicit transition words.

Structure it so every line is placed so that it hits the reader right in the feels. Relatability is key when it comes to storytelling!

After recognizing your target audience, make sure you structure your stories in a way they won't get bored while reading them. Structure is key in storytelling cause it helps your audience to flow with the story.

Seniors have a lot to add as they have a different perspective plus lots of life experience. The work was being done in the past too when the technology was not so advanced. They have their own methods to get things done. Moreover, asking for their insight will make them feel valued and they will engage more.

Seniors love to give advice and suggestion. Make them feel like riding on their experience. Their insights are very valuable and this is how they can be made to feel relevant.

What better way to get engagements than asking for feedback? Give your reader a reason to interact with your story. You need to build rapport and make them trust you enough. So yes, ask questions, encourage comments, and so on. Make sure they give you feedback. That way you've successfully hooked and engaged your reader.

I agree, even creating special calls to action to create engagement. These can also be gamified to encourage even more participation :)

Interaction. Discussion. Story. It's what makes the world go round. Why should a personal story be any different? The best stories end with continued discussion. A question and answer period is seen as enjoyable if you're selling something, even if it's a journey through the past. That's the best way to get to the future!

So, some might call me old fashioned, but I believe that you engage seniors the same way as anyone else… Tell. A. Good. Story.

In addition, you can introduce humor into your stories. Seniors often appreciate lighthearted and witty tales that bring laughter. However, be mindful of the type of humor that is culturally appropriate and appeals to their sensibilities.

Diction is perhaps something that must be considered when writing for senior readers. If you are writing a nonfiction book or article for seniors, using moderate words may be advisable. Seniors have gone through various dramas in their lives, and don't add unnecessary drama through the word choice of your writing. Use words that have deep meaning, because seniors are likely to reflect more carefully on each word they read. Don't write too long. Don't be too technical because the seniors may be more experience than you.

People are tempted to read text and learn from them on the form of storytelling. Since we are children, we have been told stories and it was to make us learn. Unless there is an enticing storytelling aspect in the content, the text would probably not be as engaging as it should be. Thus, keeping the interests of seniors in mind, craft a story to engage them.

While age is not a bar in todays times, we still instinctively gravitate towards comfort and contrary to the oft quoted proverb familiarity does not breed contempt when it comes to writing. You can make your writing more appealing when you give it a familiar socio-cultural or a value / ethic context. So seniors may be at home with a cultural context of say a joint family whereas to gen z it may seem anathema and hence the backdrop makes your wroting and your examples more relatable
