I leverage my professional network to create opportunities for collaboration, joint ventures, or guest appearances on platforms where my target audience congregates. These collaborations can expand my reach and reinforce my brand's credibility.

Reciprocity: Networking is not just about what you can get from others; it's equally about what you can offer. Being a valuable contact makes people more inclined to help you. Quality vs. Quantity: A few strong relationships can be more beneficial than hundreds of weak ones. Working with your network with a focus on personal brand is a tricky one. Personally I don't enjoy nor know how to thoughtfully do it; feels too much like asking for favors. I've found the most natural way to combine a network with brand is to collaborate with others who are also networking like you do. There is a natural alignment to help each other.

If you advise and raise alongside your VC firm's core purpose of investing, manage expectations. Don't overpromise and underdeliver, don't take on a mandate you don't believe you can land, and never 'shop' a business you haven't invested in yourself. You cannot sit across the table from a peer and discuss a business you have not backed yourself.

Financial management is a field that is constantly evolving. To maintain and enhance my personal brand, I stay up to date with industry trends, regulations, and best practices. Continual learning not only keeps my knowledge fresh but also demonstrates my commitment to my field and my clients. Academic is one of the centers of opinion. If you are inclined, serve as an advisor to the president or deans of a local university. They would love to have a VC on their advisory board. And you will get to meet interesting faculty. This will pay dividends long term.

As a founder, seek a mentor to help navigate your capital-raising journey. An effective way to do this is by appointing a Board advisor. Chosen well, they should complement a founder's skills, and having one with capital-raising experience can be advantageous. Most Board Advisors are people who angel invest; however, only in some instances. Founders should seek an independent review where possible. the shape of a capital table begins with the first investor, and understanding the best instruments to raise with at each round, the risk profiles, and possible alternatives is crucial. It ensures each raise has the best strategy based on the business' position at the time and the best chance of success.

Have a strong track record. This means having invested in and helped to grow successful startups. If you are a new VC, you can highlight your experience in other areas, such as investment banking or corporate finance. Be a good mentor. Many founders value the guidance and advice of experienced VCs. Be willing to share your knowledge and expertise with the entrepreneurs you back. Be active in the startup community. Attend industry events, mentor startups, and invest in local accelerators and incubators. This will help you to stay connected to the latest trends and developments in the startup ecosystem.
