How can you provide constructive feedback to your team without hurting their morale?

Be direct, transparent and deliver the feedback immediately. Always include specific things the person could do to make the situation better and drive different outcomes. Also make sure you deliver feedback consistently to each person each time and across the entire team. Last but not least build this into your culture and always ask for feedback yourself - make it normal for people to give and receive feedback and then it’s just a normal part of doing business.

Feedback starts with asking for self evaluation. Most of the employees are very well aware of their positives and negatives. Drill down with them by asking specific questions to get to the root causes. Most of the time you will find that they have the answer. If not add your flavor.

With feedback, the most important aspect consists of getting behind the defense. With specific and clear feedback we can address the actions and lead the conversation regards solutions rather than attacking the person for making them. Be focused on the challenge, share feedback promptly, and have empathy along the way. If you want your team to improve, incorporate EI skills into your feedback to open up their ears to listen and have a desire to implement changes.

Composing meaningful and personalized feedback may take time, but it is time and effort well spent. Vague feedback can lead to confusion and frustration, even if it's positive. People we know easily get tired with hearing "great job" or "you are awesome". And criticism without explanation and offering alternatives is not much more than arrogance.

Share right away that you need to provide constructive feedback and ask if now is a good time to do so? Asking their permission to proceed demonstrates respect and creates a safe place for them to hear the feedback and accept it more readily. Next, get right to the heart of the message, with no sugar-coating, ensuring you don’t inadvertently send a mixed message by wrapping it with fluffy positives to “ease the blow”. Then let them tell their side of the story. Ask “what” and “how” questions and never “why”, as it can be interpreted as accusational. Even if you know, or think you know what happened, play dumb, stay silent, and then really listen with an open mind ensuring they know that they have been heard.

We try to establish a open office atmosphere where most of the individuals sit besides each other, this neither makes us wait for a particular meeting to pin point mistakes nor wait for a particular event for appreciating. This works well as we'd very clearly established that we all work on a same goal & any feedbacks are discussed just like a discussion, moment any one feels we're on a wrong track/ moment when anyone has done a fantabulous job, which makes all feedbacks more constructive.

Your ability to be consistent in your messaging and to address the issues AS THEY HAPPEN WILL ALLOW the employee(s) to know what the issues is to which you are referring and to remedy the issue immediately.

Start by leading in feedback about your actions and how you want to improve culture in the workplace. Ask them to respond to anything they would like to see in the workspace. Address issues are your goal too. Individually set up time to do corrective techniques with each employee through time block or delegate solutions. Be consistent and fair by making that on spot feedback through praise of the job well done. Group project completed on time. Give a firm handshake or smile,gift card,etc. Make it part of culture to celebrate all wins big or small. No little tasks but collective tasks we are so much stronger together.Team is what makes the dream work so treat it as such at all times.

One thing I've realised over the last couple of years is that how a person takes feedback is also majorly dependant on how the other person is giving that feedback. How I do it is to point out all the achievements of the team/ individual, talk about the impact they created , celebrate their wins and then get into the failures. The feedback call should never turn into a call talking about their shortcomings but should be a balanced conversation talking about success and failures. These should be done on a regular basis and everything should be documented, starting from what is expected out of them to what they achieved against their target. This removes any subjectivity from the call. Also, the call should always end on a positive note.

After discussing areas for improvement, collaborate with team members to set specific, actionable goals. For example, if feedback is about enhancing time management, suggest and agree on a goal like "For the next project, let's aim to have all deliverables ready two days before the deadline."

Most people prefer feed-back according to the "sandwich model", i.e. start with something positive and encouraging, then deliver the negative in a constructive form, and end on something positive again. This allows the person receiving feed-back to save face, and also to remember that not all is negative but there are bright spots too.

Listening is an act of humility. It has the capacity to improve your venture in ways you may not expect. Thus, feedback is better when it's interactive. Of course, this should be done in a professional manner. For instance, all things being equal, when feedback is given and the recipient is listened to, the final feedback given is often more holistic than before because the full picture of what necessitated the feedback is more visible to both parties.

When providing feedback it should be supported by data, feedback from other leaders, examples that justify and ground it in fact and reality - with a focus on the person receiving it and how it will be interpreted. Build their trust to listen to your guidance. Next steps and Expectations need to be agreed upon and - - Identifiable - Measurable - Realistically achievable

Actionable feedback is crucial. If feedback is just opinion-based and general (“do this better”), it’s unclear HOW the person can improve. If feedback is specific and actionable (“try to make your emails more concise and professional through using simple language”), it’s much easier to implement and iterate on.

Feedback shouldn't be unrealistic or unreasonable because each person is an individual with different skills. Don't set people up for failure but don't underestimate them either. Judgement of work scope may play a part. Life might be happening that might affect performance. Give clear directions of expectation. They are accountable for their own actions. Lead by giving clear insight of job duties or project goals. Make a plan in writing to give them something to work with if you're not there. Includes detailed information so it is done accordingly to guidelines. Pick a timeline and give them info to meet with eyes open and fully aware of what's expected. Give them space to do it. Then give feedback that will be helpful not just criticism.

In my experience, most employees want to do well on their jobs. So bogus feedback is unhelpful because it is difficult to implement. Therefore, help your staff succeed by making your feedback actionable. It should be something that can be implemented immediately after the feedback is given. It should contain or give the recipient access to clear steps on what should be done.

Make feedback a two-way conversation by inviting team members to share their concerns, perspectives and ideas. This fosters a collaborative approach and empowers them to be part of the solution.

It is often best to ask what the customer might think of the performance or product and think about what might make the experience better. “How can we improve” over “here’s what we did wrong.” Keep the goal of improving should lead to determining what mistakes should be avoided next time without condemnation.

Being able to receive feedback from your employees is the ultimate act of humility for an entrepreneur. However, as uncomfortable as this process might appear, it is actually super-helpful. It helps you stay rooted on the ground. It opens your eyes to your blindspots and it shows you value in areas you may have overlooked or not considered earlier among other things.

You earn the opportunity to be direct and candid by building trust before you have to provide constructive feedback. This is done on a day-to-day basis. If your team trusts you are coming from a positive place with the feedback based on how you engage with them every other day, you don't have to sugarcoat your feedback to avoid hurting people's feelings. There is a valuable approach called the "sandwich approach " Step1: First compliment them for what they are good at, even if not on the job, may be how they show up or dress up Step2: Call their attention to the main concerns you have Step3: Reaffirmthem and validate the good things about them. This is the sandwich approach.
