A multi-cloud orchestrator that can shift loads to cloud services on off peak hours can get the processing costs extremely reasonable.

For lightweight development, I've found rent-a-gpu platforms to be great (in particular vast.ai) to be great. A few clicks on their website to pick a host with a particular GPU/system and environment (e.g. with pytorch pre-installed), then you're ready to SSH in and go. Often times, there is tendency to pick and choose the highest configuration of GPU and the thought process is Higher Number of Cores and Ram, the better it is. This is incorrect. Even a 4 year old, previous Generation GPUs are most likely sufficient for most computer vision and AI tasks. The newer architecture and GPU may offer improved performance but it’s a trade off that one needs to make. The difference is sometimes unnoticeable. The best part of using older generation GPUs is that the cost of these are significantly less and the availability is high. These GPUs have mostly reached end of life and Cloud Providers offer huge discounts to these types instances.

AI development can be considered as a 2 phase process. One is the Data cleansing, Data Pre-processing, Data augmentation and Data Labelling and Model configuration. The second phase is the actual Model Training and Model Optimisation. For the first phase, most of the time, a GPU is not needed. A good machine with enough CPU cores and integrated GPU (iGPU) is sufficient. Most of the times the power of multi-core CPU is often underestimated. For writing the code, a Google collab kind of environment is sufficient and it’s free The second phase where Model Training happens, yes a GPU is a must.
