1 Know your audience

Before you start designing your learning project, you need to know who your audience is and what they need to learn. Conduct a thorough needs analysis to identify their goals, motivations, challenges, and expectations. You can use surveys, interviews, focus groups, or other methods to collect data from a representative sample of your audience. Whenever I train to a larger group it is because I was invited by the "facilitator". I have the facilitator obtain background on each participant with a short questionairre. From there I can adjust my presentation accordingly. The group may then have to be divided according to experience, which actually is a time saver in my presentation, less Q&A, misunderstanding, etc. If division is not possible participants are given a caveat at the beginning of my talk that not individuals are at the same learning/experience level. So, if I am explaining something they may already know, consider it a "refresher". Also break out groups and teaming people together with various levels of experience is a great tool to use.

In my experience with learning projects, I've found it crucial to employ a diverse range of formats, particularly in online learning. Relying on a singular format can lead to less engagement, as learners may become accustomed to a specific style of learning. By integrating various formats, we can captivate learners' attention more effectively, preventing monotony and fostering sustained interest. Moreover, aligning diverse activities with each format reinforces the information. This strategic combination ensures that the knowledge is absorbed through multiple channels, thereby creating a more profound and enduring impact on the learner's understanding.

D'expérience, le meilleur format est de proposer un mixte entre le présentiel et le virtuel. Le présentiel afin de renforcer la cohésion de groupe, de stimuler l'apprentissage et de facilité les échanges. Le virtuel afin de permettre aux apprenants de travailler à leur propre rythme, depuis chez eux, et de réviser à tête reposée les apprentissages étudiés précédemment en présentiel. L'ensemble favorise la consolidation des acquis. Lors de la présentation des cours ou programmes, diversifier les supports : audio pour les personnes auditives (MP3), vidéo (extraits de films, conférences TED) pour les personnes visuelles et activités plus ludiques, à réaliser chez soi ou pendant le temps en groupe pour les personnes kinesthésiques (le toucher).

Le but est de mesurer si la formation a répondu à leurs attentes et s'il y a des axes d'amélioration possibles. Parmi les questions du 1er questionnaire : - Qu'attendez-vous de cette formation ? - Avez-vous déjà suivi une formation similaire ? - Quel est votre objectif (montée en compétences, reconversion professionnelle, simple curiosité, autre).

Il faut maintenir un équilibre entre la place aux échanges et à chacun d'exprimer ses besoins, ses ressentis, voire ses émotions tout en maintenant un groupe attentif et concentré, qui ne se dissipe pas.
