How can you boost your creativity as a journalist?

Engage with people from all fields of life if not personally, online or professional networks like Linkedin. Do not restrict yourself.

There are many ways to showcase the creativity as a journalist at presentation level and to attain that creativity you need to be — 1. Open & courageous for crossing the boundaries of defined approaches to narrate a story for example— exploring the angle that’s not obvious. 2. Experimental in storytelling as in while drafting a story you can change the order of fact sharing that is usually practiced in media. 3. Extremely unpredictable while writing a headline, adding a flavour for example satirical tone that The Telegraph does a lot these days. 4. Willing to explore data driven analytics because in general not every journalist find it luring to add mathematical value to story. A lot of time numbers do the magic.

I'd say "diversify" in the literal sense of the word. Increase consumption of material that has nothing to do with work and particularly those that have been produced by people whose lives are totally different from yours. Also, make an effort to connect with people who don't look and think like you.

Imagine the story to be factual, but has never been told due to external, or deliberate cover-ups, mis/disinformation, then find anyone or anything that provides information that is legally fit for broadcast or print.

Explore a range of industry materials, case studies, interviews and consumer insights to inform your writing with diverse perspectives.

Stretch beyond conventional copy. Try different ad formats, social media content, or promotional materials to find your unique voice and style.

Push your boundaries through practice. Don’t limit yourself to work assignments. Write short articles for your own pleasure - about birdwatching, or scuba diving, or salsa dancing. Whatever interests you & sparks joy in you. Then read through what you’ve written to se what works and what doesn’t. THEN transfer these lessons to your work.

Team up with designers, marketers, or data analysts. Collaborative efforts often result in more comprehensive and effective marketing narratives.

This is not always an option but where possible, try to cluster interviews in a block of time and do the same for writing, to avoid being interrupted and losing your train of thought.

Avoid burnout. Regular breaks refresh your creativity, ensuring your marketing copy remains innovative and impactful. The environment around you recharges you and gives you more ideas. Make sure to mix and mingle with all kinds of people!

Study successful marketing campaigns. Analyze what works and adapt those strategies to your writing, staying attuned to industry trends.

I made connections with producers in other markets, particularly ones who I looked up to. Just watching how another person puts together their newscast gives you a new perspective. I also loved having watch parties with other colleagues to get their input and ideas.

Step outside of your comfort zone, in the age of convergence lots of new skills emerge by the combination of skills. Evaluate how many such skills you have and work on them, highlight them, enhance them.
