How you want to help people by your sulutions? These are fundamental questions you need to respond to yourself and then to your talents.

Keep it simple - and to get buy in or alignment- be Transparent and Consistent. Both are very hard to keep doing even if there is intent.. but is best way…makes it easier for talent to engage with you.. and connect w startup’s core interests.

When defining your company values, it's important not to water them down. If you try to please everyone and cover all situations, your values could end up too bland and vague. To avoid that, it helps to be clear about who does NOT fit these values. It's totally fine to draw some lines and be straightforward about who you do and don't want in your company.

In my experience, putting together a great team is the toughest part of starting a new business, or even for one that's been around a while. If you choose the right people for your startup, it means their values already match up with yours. It's not a good idea to hire first and then tell them about your values later in a startup. Hiring the wrong person can be really costly and hard to fix. When I interview someone for a job, I always start by telling them about the vision, mission, and values of the startup. Then I see if they're excited about it. If they are, then we can talk more about the technical or job-specific stuff.

Along with communicating values , it’s important that you exhibit values in your behaviour and action each day in small and big matters ; then only the impact of true value can passed around in each and every individual of the start up organisation .otherwise its just like a parent preaching children to not lie / but they themselves lie in front of kids - then it’s just a waste as no one will follow however strongly it is communicated ! Values must be lived and breathed !

It's probably equally as important to celebrate people regularly who embody the values, while being stern on disciplining its violation of it.

Hiring for values is critical for startups. It's about going beyond the resume and understanding who the candidate is at their core. I focus on three key aspects: Past Experiences: Dive into their past roles, not just what they did, but how and why. This reveals their decision-making style and alignment with our values. Scenario-Based Questions: Present hypothetical situations relevant to our startup's challenges. Observing their thought process offers insights into their value system and problem-solving abilities. Team Interaction: I believe in involving the team in the hiring process. How candidates interact with potential colleagues can be very telling about their fit in our culture.

Over my last 50 hires, i'm slowly thinking to believe that character is more important than the skillset. If you find someone likeminded, eager to learn and in sync with your company profile - hire. If you find a great candidate, that meets all the requirements but is unsure about the vision. Think twice.

You have 2 steps in the process.: 1. Identifying your values 2. Identifying those values in the person you're hiring The first part is done internally mainly by the leadership team. For the 2nd part, a process change needs to occur. We used to hold 3 interview rounds with any candidates - hygiene round, skill round and culture round. While the first 2 rounds are meant to reject a candidate i.e qualifiers if the candidate has the right background and skills we are looking for. The 3rd round was a selection round i.e what's the story of the candidate. What were hard decisions he/she took in their lives and do they display the values that we've written down. Give a score for every value then take the average to get the culture round score.

I always look for candidates who go beyond the resume. Someone who has more skills and experience so that he or she can add value to the startup. You should also look there interest in learning and gaining experience if they don't have any prior one.

Values of potential talent can be judged through asking them to work on case studies, knowing their deeper intentions to join your organisation and their interactions with your fellow colleagues.

It takes time to find individuals who align with your values. Communicating the values upfront and understanding the talent as a human would help identify whether it's a good match or not. Once identified, it's necessary to have constant communication with your talent to make sure your values are aligned and in case there is any misalignment make sure to sort it out. What do people want? A good atmosphere, work which keeps them motivated and enough money to cover their expenses. So if you're able to align the talent with what you can offer and what they need it'll be a good match. Eventually, this keeps on changing on either side so it is good to have regular checkins to understand the same.

Quarterly and mid-year reviews can provide a great opportunity to review both on performance and values. It doesn’t need to be a lift! 3-5 questions (at least one focused on values) is a great place to start.

Especially in a fast-paced work environment its easy to overlook the way that certain aspects of the business operate. Taking the time to review your actions and management style/structure every quarter will allow you to build a strong company culture.

It is therefore important to define these values at the beginning and to constantly check whether the values still fit and are also taken into account in daily decisions. 3 important steps that I can recommend: 1. define a value horizon 2. include the different perspectives of the stakeholders 3. ask at the operational level: How can ethics be implemented in everyday business? Do all founding members consider these values in the decision and how?

Here are some reference check questions from Jeff Stump (Andreessen Horowitz) that you can reframe to be more in line with your values: How long have you known the candidate and how did you come to know him/her? What was your relationship and for how long? How would you describe the candidate from a professional viewpoint? From a personal viewpoint? What was the condition of the business before and after his/her arrival? What did the candidate fail to do and why? Would you hire the candidate in a position requiring what I’ve described to you? Would you be concerned? If you were my client, what would you want to know about the candidate?

When I started my startup aligning my team with my startup values was a little difficult but overtime I realized what to do and honestly, it's simple: - Clearly define your startup's values. What principles are non-negotiable for your company? Once you've got that nailed down, look for talent that not only has the right skills but also shares those values. - Foster a culture that reflects those values. Whether it's through team-building exercises, regular communication, or recognition programs, make sure your startup's ethos is ingrained in everything you do. - Lead by example. As the founder, your actions speak volumes. Show your team that you're committed to upholding the values you've set forth, and they'll follow suit.

Implement values-based recognition programs and conduct regular values check-ins. Include values in performance management, support values-driven projects, and offer continuous values education. These strategies ensure values are actively lived across the organisation, deeply embedding them in your team's daily work and mindset, and WALK THE TALK to motivate the team living those values.

Also be ready to be adaptive. Sometimes what your employees bring on board can actually make your existing value system even better. So don't be adamant and be open to even learn from the experiences of your joinees. Culture building in a company is always a two way street.
