How can a feedback-rich culture improve employee performance?

Authentic, timely and constructive feedback is always well received and builds trust ! This needs to be done both ways (Manager to employee and vice versa). If done consistently, this will definitely facilitate building feedback rich culture and eventually drive High performance !

The word feedback itself can be overwhelming for some people. How about calling it check ins / catch ups / (we can be innovative here) A feedback rich culture is one where all employees are able to share their thoughts freely with each other (in any direction) and when formal meetings do happen, there is absolutely no element of surprise. The formal meetings should be a place to discuss way forward. I have come across managers who didn’t share feedback since their subordinate did not block their calendar and vice versa. It’s just a way of avoiding conflict and not being confident in yourself. I think here is where HR teams should step in and create an environment that encourages employees to speak with one another.

In my experience, Feedback should also be gauged on the basis of need-want analysis. Not every want is what you need and vise versa.

Creating a feedback-rich culture is not a one-time effort, but a continuous journey that requires commitment and adaptability. By prioritizing a safe and supportive environment, timely and constructive feedback, and encouraging two-way communication, organizations can foster a culture where feedback becomes an integral part of everyday life. This feedback-rich culture, in turn, can have a transformative effect on employee performance, leading to increased productivity, engagement, and overall success.

Daily or weekly meetings with the team or individual to encourage candid dialogue about issues, challenges and best practices is a good segue time giving feedback, both positive or negative. Questions like, how the team or individuals could have handled a situation better, what they can improve on, etc, are helpful. Allowing individuals to contribute and encouraging them to do so, can make them feel like a valuable part of the team. Also, employees can go to their leadership and ask for feedback. That displays a sense of accountability and shows that you are fully engaged and committed to getting the job done effectively and efficiently.

I think why feedback matters the most is because it’s a communication tool. As human beings it is important for us to know what others are thinking about us and hence a timely feedback will help an individual to work on the actions rather than spending time second guessing on what needs to be done. A clear and precise feedback is the best communication channel.

In my opinion, feedback matters for performance because it provides valuable information on how well we're doing our jobs. When we know how we're doing, we can make necessary adjustments, leading to better results. In simple terms, feedback is like a coach guiding us in a game; it helps us perform at our best and reach our full potential.

We all see things differently, and when it comes to self-assessment we all have blind spots. Feedback helps us gather different perspectives, highlight the areas for us (be that areas for improvement, or our superpowers that we need to show more of!) that we might want to look into more details, and provides us coordinates on further development.

To do this: - Observe: Pay attention to how often feedback occurs and in what form (verbal, written, etc.). - Ask: Gather input from employees through surveys or informal conversations to understand their experiences and perceptions of feedback. - Evaluate: Check if feedback is specific, timely, and balanced (both positive and constructive). - Analyze Impact: Consider how feedback affects employee performance, morale, and overall teamwork. - Compare: Compare your findings to your ideal feedback culture, and identify areas for improvement.

I would start with checking what tools currently exist in the organization, for providing feedback. Is there any other way than direct 1:1 conversation, an email, IM etc. Is there a more structured approach to gathering different perspectives? If not - this would be a starting point in assessing feedback culture.

Feedback can sometimes reflect more on the person giving it than the receiver. I have experienced both positive and negative feedback that left me scratching my head. Examples should be given to enable discussion and perspective of a situation. This is the only way to truly avoid bias or perceived bias. Coming from a culture where feedback was encouraged in real-time but many people’s real world experience was ‘you have to play the game’ killed so much opportunity but also gave no space for addressing misunderstandings.
