Needs assessment is first and foremost component in social policy development. Different types of assessment may be required at a later date though. Although, I have never been part of a wider policy development, I have studied it. For any policy to be successful, policy makers need to do a scoping exercise of the population needs and resources.

Following on from needs assessment, you need compelling stories that provide evidence for any policy to be enacted. For example, for a policy related to children’s health, community visits and interactions with key stakeholders is vital. By engaging with the concerned community, you find stories that provide necessary information to inform policy making. Ultimately, the policy has to correspond to the needs of the community.
