I cannot agree less with the last supporting statement. You will see lot of young lads like myself, chew and regurgitating during interviews and when they land the job, the practical know-how is no where to found. But to be an outstanding candidate, it goes beyond miles of just knowing and ita implementation code-wise. I have lots and lots of software projects that i'm ashamed to show you because most of them are a.... failure. And the successful one's are not that interesting compared to kernel dev or device dev.

An interview once asked me if I knew React Native (a mobile app framework), I show him an app (a contact app) I built using this tech on my phone explaining him how it work, what are the challenges I've tackled. The thing is that when you showcase a project you've worked on and explain it, people can understand your problem solving abilities.

If I did work for their provider, I ask, "How was your enrollment experience?" If they had a good experience, I'll add, "I'm glad you had a good experience, here is what I did to make your life better." Another question I'll ask, "Have you used the local toll road calculator?" If their answers is "Yes", then I tell them I wrote it and make some comments about the technology. If they say "No", then I invite them to play with it and see how they like my code and the UI/UX I created. Then I tie my work they have used to what I can do to make their company shine.
