When I transitioned to freelance HR, building credibility was paramount. I pursued certifications like the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), which demonstrated my expertise and commitment to staying current in the field. I also created a portfolio showcasing successful projects, such as a comprehensive employee engagement program that significantly reduced turnover for a client. Sharing my insights on HR forums and writing articles about industry trends further solidified my reputation. These efforts paid off, attracting clients who trusted my knowledge and experience, enabling me to establish a thriving freelance career.

Determining your rates is a delicate balance between what you need to earn and what the market will bear. Research what other freelance HR consultants are charging by scouring job boards and reaching out to peers. Be transparent with potential clients about your pricing structure, whether it's hourly, per project, or retainer-based. Ensure your rates reflect your experience, expertise, and the value you bring to the table.

In my experience setting competitive rates is something you will have to review regularly, at least once a year. Analyze the market and your competitors, other consultants' rates as much as you can. Evaluate how well you are doing for your clients. Do they offer testimonial or recommendation? Do they call you again and again? Read into all signs you can plus evaluate how you compare to others in the market, education- and experience wise. I was once told that if your clients accept your rate without no hesitation then your rates are probably too low...
Persistence often pays off in securing freelance HR projects. After initial discussions or proposals, follow up with potential clients to reiterate your interest and the benefits of working with you. A gentle reminder can keep you top of mind and may come just when the client is ready to make a decision. Remember, follow-ups should be professional and courteous, not pushy or intrusive.
