Here's how you can explain building design technicalities to a non-technical audience.

I think building design is more of a visual language between client and architect. All the requirements of client are so well placed and interlinked that it not only suffice the clients requirements but also add spice in a more aesthetical way, more artistic way and creating better spatial quality. The space so created will create moments for ever by enhancing colour schemes, different materials & textures, fabrics & upholstery, lighting schemes adding ambience to overall space. Appropriate techniques and detail working prior execution can reduce future maintenances. This all can be presented to client in presentation of scheme through elevations n sections, colour palette, fabric palette, material palette and 3 dimensional views.

Each person understands differently the information that you share. Do not forget that. What you say is not always what the others understand. Try using as I like to say "triangulation speech", visual, text/drawing and sound information and see at what kind of information your audience reacts. Then explain your idea in 3 different ways with 3 different examples based on the input stimulus. This way you can get close for your audience to understand the shared information. What you experienced before is the best reference you can build your comparison or explanation on, because when you experience something yourself you already have feelings towards it, going from relief to discomfort or any other feeling that you can easily relate to Imagine describing a fruit to someone who never tasted it, you will find yourself linking it to other tasted fruits, that’s how the human minds and imagination work

While relating to personal or shared experiences is powerful, I believe the ability to relate to their current shared surroundings leaves a stronger impact. This was a technique I was able to use successfully on several occasions and these are a few ways you can do it too. 1. Stay well read and revised in advance for the discussion you are about to have. 2. Be aware of your surroundings- best is to arrive a little before the meet up and just observe some environmental cues. 3. Be quick on your feet - a conversation can go in any direction and you need to be ready for using cues from the ongoing conversation and surroundings to make your explanation more relatable.
