I don't think you have to be an exceptional writer to excel at strategic comms. There is so much more to the role, like understanding how to improve communication flow, identifying/defining key messages, knowing your audiences, solving breakdowns etc. The writing part can be done in lots of ways, you can always delegate, transcribe etc. It definitely helps if you can recognise good writing though!
