When possible, I have found that spending time living in a country of origin of one or both of the languages is helpful to add a deeper level of understanding for the translator. In regards to historical texts, for example Ancient Japanese, spending time in modern Japan can still lend some insight into how writing is used and has been used and regarded by the people that can't and won't be captured in text. Doing this research while deeply reading texts in the source language adds layers of meaning and understanding when the translator is immersed in the language.

The best way to understand a culture is to live in it for as long as one can or, when the culture is no longer available due to border changes or time, to get as close as possible to the culture of origin. Someone translating Beowulf cannot return to ancient England but by living in the same land of the story the translator can build a deeper understanding of the mindset of the characters, writers and intended audience which may shape the translation. East Germany many no longer exist post Cold War, but people from that time are still alive and there are still scars lingering in the streets of Germany to highlight the life of those during that time. No amount of conversations with experts compares to a walk down those memory lanes.

The best way to translate is for the target language to be the translator's native language, therefore the translator should focus more on learning about the source language and the cultural nuances between the two cultures (& time periods) and the best way to do this beyond courses and instruction is to spend time in a country where that language is spoken as a native language.
