Here's how you can build resilience as a junior software engineer and transition to a senior level.

Every day issues we confront make us more mature and capable of solving any difficulty while also training ourselves for critical thinking. Breaking down the primary criteria or problems is a valuable talent that grows with each project that presents new hurdles. Every day of practice teaches us to tolerate failure and keep trying until we succeed.

The new feature that you developed with meticulous care went through code reviews and quality assurance, but still caused a bad user experience in production because of a defect that nobody anticipated. Trust your end users to find bizarre ways to break your code. Don't feel discouraged, despondent or dismayed. You'll fix it, you'll reflect on how you can prevent it next time and you'll move on. Maybe you will consider the benefits of test driven development. Or get help from an AI coding assistant. Maybe with a poem in mind: Life handed him a lemon, As Life sometimes will do. His friends looked on in pity, Assuming he was through. They came upon him later, Reclining in the shade In calm contentment, drinking A glass of lemonade.

Fail fast and fall forward. Buzzwords, but does have a meaning for everyone. As a junior engineer you only need to focus on making as many mistakes as you can. Nobody teaches you better than a heap of failing tests and a critical code review and an occasional production issue. Learn from them, you will become more than you can ever imagine.

Failure is inevitable, fail fast and don't repeat. It is ok to fail and learn from the mistakes to make sure we are not repeating the same failure, address the gap of the failure, share the knowledge to the team why it failed, what was missing, and plan to fix it. Document the root cause of the failure and details to address so that other team/members will be benefit.

In my opinion, you need to have a structured approach on problem thinking, to make sure you have your own way of thinking and dont miss a path in your troubleshooting. Ask yourself: what are the dependencies of this component that is not working as expected, check every dependency. Dependencies can be a property file,a library, an api, an image in a specific path .. check the error, and make sure your check the dependency accordingly. Then, for example, they API key is not working, check if you have used the correct value,do you have the key for another environment?Maybe you used another's environment key? Also,don't forget to ask collogues, check the different communities and check AI tools as well. The most important part don't panic.

A Mentor can provide you with a different perspective dimension on how we think and deal any situation and crisis.

The bad question are the ones which hasn't been asked. Even after many years i still ask simple questions and you should too.

The most useful skill that allowed my career to progress was effective communication. I took a couple of technical writing courses to develop those skills and joined Toastmasters to improve my presentation and impromptu speaking. As an added bonus, Toastmasters also improved my time management; in particular learning how much information I could reasonably cover in five, ten or twenty minutes.

As you mature in your role, you realize that having a good understanding of the technical part is half the battle. You need to "sell" it. Communication and presentation skills are as important as the technical ones. They need to go hand in hand to become a senior engineer.

Cultivating soft skills for your team is essential for their overall development and the team's success. 1. Assessment and goal setting for your team. 2. Identify each strength and weakness of the team with a recent example. 3. Provide coaching, and mentoring enroll them in webinars, online training etc. 4. Create a supportive environment for Psychological safety and encourage open communication. 5. Provide a path for continuous learning and improvement. 6. Regularly track and evaluate the progress of soft skills development against the set goals.

In SW engineering what you learn today will be outdated tomorrow. Don't stop looking at new technologies. Tech industry is really ever-evolving, you can't possible be up to date with everything, nobody is trusts me.

Challenges are the best chances for success and growth. (Challenges === Opportunity). Tackling challenges effectively involves a strategic approach, a clear mindset, and utilizing available resources. Identify the challenge by analyzing the situation, and developing a plan. Share the plan with the team and make necessary changes based on the team discussion. Decide to implement the plan, stay flexible, and adapt if it needs to change. Stay positive and persist through difficulties. After resolving the challenge reflect and learn what worked and what didn't. By following these steps, You can systematically tackle challenges, improve your problem-solving skills, and increase your chances of success.

Even if you look at a task/story/project and immediately say okay this is too much. Take it, try to analyze it yourself, look for best practices for such problems, ask questions, ask for guidance. Being bold is a key in becoming better.

To accelerate growth as a junior engineer, gaining exposure to various parts of the technology stack is essential. This includes front-end applications, backend APIs and services, databases, ML/AI models, infrastructure and platform engineering, and quality engineering. Such exposure develops a well-rounded understanding of system operations, data flows, and component interactions, which is highly beneficial when transitioning to more senior roles. Becoming a senior engineer requires time and dedication. There are no shortcuts. It involves the continous broadening and deepening of technical skills while developing the critical leadership skills required to succeed in more senior positions.
