Here's how you can address common conflicts between employees and their bosses.

Issues arise either due to lack of clarity or miscommunication and at times due to mismanagement of egos. Ideally we should help people develop their goals and action plans, see their sense of urgency in achieving those goals. When these are moderated together a lot of the gaps can be eliminated. People should be flexible to changing their execution plans but should stick to goals. Sadly majority of the issues arise when plans remain rigid but goals are somewhat lost in translation. If both goals and plans are not a problem then try to address the ego angle, which is usually a harder one to resolve.

Prior to comprehending the dispute, be sure you are here to provide a well-rounded remedy that will ease people's minds. Your inner "EGO" villain will be virtually completely eliminated or brought down to a minimum by adopting such a BALANCED assertion. You should be aware that the usual question that arises when two people compete is, "Who is the best?" Here, there is no high status—rather, you must accept yourself as an appeasement—without preferences or dislikes, without prior judgment, and without listening to either side.

Crucial Conversations training teaches to state facts and not create stories. For example, you have an employee who has been late to three meetings. You could tell yourself the story that they are unmotivated and lazy. If you bring that story to the employee in conversation, it will likely not be well-received, plus it draws inferences that may be untrue. Instead, lead with the facts, empathy and allow for space for them to share. "I have noticed tardy arrivals to three of our team meetings in the past four days. I wanted to check in with you and make sure things are okay. How are you doing?"

My team and all our clients know my favorite part of being a human is conversation. In fact, having just watched Inside Out #2, even teenagers can share what's going on with them! We all need to put our phones down, stop texting and emailing and talk more. If you're feeling a little uncomfortable, do a walking talk. If both people are walking in the same direction vs. feeling compelled to face one another, you'd be amazed and what you can accomplish!

Open communication should be initiated with the appropriate aim of providing a solution to a problem. No conflict can be resolved unless there is a clear intention to find a solution. As previously said, you should reduce EGO on both sides to the lowest feasible degree so that mutual discussion can occur. It also helps you demonstrate empathy by listening and caring about a solution.

Start with the end in mind. Be clear about what you intend to get out of the conversation. Come prepared with bullet points (to not be scripted), stay open minded and cordial.

As noted earlier, help people paint a blank canvas with their needs and wants, and do your best to understand those. Clarify, ask questions and work with them to develop a plan that can realise those needs and wants. It is hard work, it is continuous work and it should be selfless work.

Over communication is paramount when discussing expectations with employees and it's this simple activity that gets lost with some leaders. As I prepare for our end of year reviews two things are apparent to me. One, the process won't be too strenuous due to preparedness and the frequent conversations I have with each individual. Second, there will NOT be any surprises to the employee when they receive their review since the entire year has been spent discussing progress, areas of opportunity and the expectations coming from corporate. As a leader you will also see myself walking the sales floor and when I am not there I have an open door policy for anyone to have a conversation.

If you can't say what needs to be done, then you have to accept what they tell you they will do. If they tell you what they will do take the time to understand it. Tell them which parts you need more information on, what you disagree with, and what they need to execute on. Quantify it. SMART. Don't assume they know any of it. Annually is so infrequent that it's destructive. There's no reason not to do this every week. Be adaptable. Value changes and you need to be aware of that.

One thing I have found helpful is to set expectations collaboratively at the start of a project. This helps get team buy in, and ensures they understand the expectations clearly. And, more frequently than not, most people on the team share the same or very similar expectations which helps to build trust between everyone.

Feedback is easier to share, and easier to hear, when it doesn't come out of the blue. No one appreciates being "bamboozeled" by their boss, or anyone else, and the best results don't come from fear or urgency, but rather from alignment and good communication. Feedback is not just a filled form or an interview this is also an art of reading the body language where you can read the visible emotions like - comfort, discomfort, neutral emotions, restlessness, eye movements, Facial expressions and many other traits. Experience teaches a lot and natural feedback reading can prevent many conflicts at initial level.

Sometimes receiving feedback gracefully can be difficult, especially if that feedback is negative and unexpected. Resist the urge to defend what is being criticized. Acknowledge that you were unaware of how it was not meeting expectations and that you intend to address it. If you're not able to receive it well, acknowledge that. It's okay to ask for clarification or further information later when you can approach feedback with curiosity. When providing feedback, use non-blaming language and avoid personalizing or using all-or-nothing language like 'always' or 'never' when attempting constructive criticism and acknowledge positive intent when possible. For example: "I get we were on a deadline. I still want X." Instead of "You never do X."

When conflicts become complex or emotionally charged, mediation can be incredibly helpful.
