You've finalized your podcast content. How do you handle a guest expert wanting major revisions?

It's vital to approach a guest expert's request for major revisions with an open mind. Sometimes, these changes can significantly enhance your podcast's quality and relevance. However, always balance their input with your vision and audience's interests. Evaluate if the suggested changes align with your content goals without compromising your schedule. Effective communication and mutual respect can often turn such challenges into opportunities for growth, ensuring your podcast remains both engaging and professional.

The most major “stop and assess” moment is if they learned new information or are correcting themselves. Always take time for accuracy. And double check them, again.

This goes back to setting expectations. I usually tell people from the get go that what gets recorded is what goes live. Separately, I think the ask for revisions is usually only in newer guests who are more nervous about what they say.

Make the interviewee aware of critical time constraints, production schedule adherence and the adverse impact of major adjustments after the podcast has already been recorded. Offer them the option to drop the interview all together and/or reschedule for a later date.

I’d say, start with making it about them. Always start with “you” that makes them feel seen and respected. Let them know you’ve thought about it. THEN explain any hang ups you have, production, timeline, or otherwise.

There should almost always be a contract and/or an outline of the editorial process for them to see. If you consistently run into people wanting to edit episodes, long term you should build in a co-edit process (if you want to do that) with them, so they can see before final. Also, if this is a common problem, take a look at your OWN editing. Be humble and ask yourself if you’re really understanding what they are trying to communicate. Maybe ask them more clarifying questions. And definitely take more time and care.

Offering alternatives when a guest expert requests major revisions is crucial. Instead of outright rejecting their ideas, consider proposing different ways to address their concerns. For example, you might incorporate their insights into a future episode or expand on the topic through a blog or social media.
