You're facing setbacks in your career roadmap. How do you maintain motivation to keep moving forward?
When you've meticulously planned your career path, encountering setbacks can feel like a significant blow. It's not just about the immediate hurdles; it's the impact on your motivation that can be most challenging. In a world where career trajectories are seldom linear, maintaining the drive to push forward despite setbacks is a vital skill in personal development. So, how do you keep the flame of motivation burning when the road ahead seems fraught with obstacles?
If your career hits a snag, it's time to reassess your goals. Consider whether your objectives still align with your values and if they're realistic given your current situation. Sometimes, a setback is an opportunity in disguise to refine what you truly want. Adjusting your goals isn't a sign of defeat; it's a strategic move that keeps you flexible and responsive to change. Remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint, and staying adaptable is key to long-term success.

A change in career or a small turn in the same field is a normal process. I have done it in my working life from a Dietitian to a secondary school teacher, and now from the normal private school to mostly teaching online, developing educational material. Everything nowadays happens at a super fast speed and flexibility is key to coping with technological innovation and the so many changes around. The model of the same job from college/uni till retirement is old-fashioned and does not apply to our generation anymore. We shall reinvent ourselves as many times as necessary to make our job truly enjoyable. It is nobody else's task it is ours.

This happens to all of us. We often imagine things will go a certain way, but reality usually turns out differently. Sometimes in our careers, we don't achieve what we want for various reasons—lack of time or resources, for example. But it's okay to take a break because it can lead to a big breakthrough. When we talk about dreams and passions, we must be ready for anything. You might succeed right away, or it might take several tries. Regardless, we should always keep learning and improving. You may have to pause for a while, but all the hard work you've put in won't go to waste. It will pay off at the right time.

Don't worry about goals. Focus on what you can control. After that, dig into your values. I'll say it over and over. Your values will give you the proper foundation to build on top of again when you have hit your lowest points. You're goals wont matter if you're not filling your own cup. Then you can start looking at your goals to see if they even align anymore. My guess is that the reason you "setback" is because you're not doing things you initially set out to do...

Re-evaluating goals is an important process to ensure that you are heading in the right direction. There are some steps that we must take into account, which are reviewing the current goals, which are the goals that we set in the past and measuring the degree of their importance. Determining priorities. Based on our review of our goals, the priority that may be is determined. Changes have changed with time and with the circumstances of the surrounding environment. We must identify opportunities and risks, and set new goals that are in line with our current vision. This results in new goals and new plans, and they must be flexible and adapt to the changing and unstable environment in order to guarantee success.

You would be happily surpriseda how many people in your industry on LinkedIn are willing to take the time to chat with you. Reaching out to someone can be difficult, but I promise you, the biggest step is gaining the courage to ask. Look for someone maybe a couple years ahead of you and send a message. Chances are they have gone through the same thing. If nothing else, you'll feel heard and supported. This is also where a coach, counsellor or mentor can help guide you closer to an answer you're looking for.

I visualize success by setting clear quarterly performance goals for my team. I imagine the team exceeding client satisfaction targets and achieving significant growth in assets under management. I visualize team meetings where everyone is engaged and excited about their accomplishments. By visualizing these outcomes, I inspire my team to work collaboratively towards success and maintain a positive outlook, even during challenging times.
Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial when navigating career setbacks. It's easy to get caught up in negative thoughts that can spiral into demotivation. The fact that you are possibly frustrated with this setback means that you are in the right mindset and getting ready to take action by start asking some questions. Be fearful when you are comfortable in a non-growth state. Everything great takes time and it's always a roller coaster. Simply being aware that you are frustrated helps you to realize that these feelings are normal for positive growth. Take is as you're higher self saying "Hey, I know you can do better than this" All you have to do is listen and follow where it goes.

Taking action is very powerful and fulfilling. When you learn something and apply it practically, you feel accomplished. Using SMART goals is key. Set a goal for the month and aim to achieve at least 70-80% of it. Once you do, you'll find yourself more in control and serious about your career. You'll start prioritizing effectively and saying no to unnecessary distractions. Taking action is the first step to success.

1) Find ways of maintaining optimism and **HOPE**. E.g.: religion, mindfulness practices, positive self-talk/couseling, etc. 2) Be consistent vis-a-vis your career-development goals. Setbacks are par for the course--this is true for many endeavors in life. With that in mind, strive to be steadfast and dogged--strive to achieve your self-development and other goals, 1% at a time. 3) Relatedly: trust your journey. Meaning: one can emulate famous--or personally-known--"successful" people. But similar to human personality, DNA, or fingerprints, every indidividual in the world has their own style, strengths (and weaknesses), etc. Upshot: strive to do your best, but don't expect instant results/"success"!
