How to lead often depends on the context. My rule of thumb is that the more urgent the situation, the more directive the leader may need to act. For example, in my experience, in a printing plant, a broken machine needs quick action to repair or replace a part to avoid a backlog and lost money. Even though urgent, a discussion with the engineer may be advisable--which is smarter, repair or replace the broken part? Hire experts and listen to them. More time allows more discussion and input from the team, so planning emergency scenarios early is advantageous. This is using the leadership spectrum. Time enables more collaborative leadership and, in most cases, results in better, quicker decisions when the situation requires urgency.
Next, evaluate what resources are available to you, including tools, team members, and information. Knowing what you have at your disposal can significantly narrow down your problem-solving options and lead you to a more feasible solution. This step is crucial because overlooking available resources can lead to wasted time or even failure to solve the problem within the required timeframe.
Prioritization is essential when solving time-sensitive problems. Determine which aspects of the problem need immediate attention and which can be dealt with later. This helps in managing your time efficiently and ensures that you are addressing the most critical elements first. Use prioritization methods like the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize tasks based on their urgency and importance.
