You're dealing with conflicting visions on set. How can you bridge the gap between videographers and editors?

Typically I have worked through a producer who has their own editor in mind before a project begins. I also edit, so I understand that there are certain things an editor is looking for to optimize workflow upon receipt, because chances are they will be the team on the crunch time end of any deliverable. I typically try to reach out to the editor in conference with the producer before I shoot on a project so that I can know what they need in terms of shooting specs, frame rates and most importantly color space. The overall look and feel should be dictated by the client thru the producer, but sometimes not clearly, and often the editors already know the client or producer so that early conversation provides perspective & sets expectations.

The first step is to understand each other. Often there is a big communication gap between the videographer understanding what the director is trying to say. In that trial and error, there can be rising tension and conflict that can be frustrating for both parties. It is important to sit back and make sure that both parties understand properly what is the vision and be open to each other's ideas and criticism. Even though in most situations, the director is the person that is leading, it is only the videographers that can make their idea come to life. So extending that empathy is crucial.

In some projects editor also need to be involved in production so that while shooting videographer can share his point of view and objectives. When both of them are align to achieve same goal, friction is less. And if any difference in perspective they can resolve during shoot on the set. Open dialogue with crew is important for larger picture to maintain harmony during shoot.

Vision Conflicts are most common in a place where there is no proper communication. what i would suggest is to clear all the plans with the set and the people who are all working on it beforehand. Draw up an vision board a mutual one where both parties can suggest. Make both videographer and the editor to communicate freely to give suggestion. If all the communications are in proper order there won't be any future confilcts. Communication and Collaborative approach bridges the gap and creates a seamless and unified workflow.

"Director makes the cut, but Editor is the 2nd director" That’s what has been happening in the film and TV industries where I’ve worked. Disputes between the post-production team and the production team have been common stories for decades. I believe open dialogue would improve things. Instead of shouting about each other’s mistakes, let’s focus on finding solutions.

One must always remember that in any industry or profession there will be conflict of opinions, and conflicts of views on how to proceed with editing, acting, videography and even script writing styles. How do we deal with these conflicts? My best suggestion is to vote by secret ballot. Those who are for a certain style or opinion could vote their choice, because the old style of tossing a coin would not work in disputes that involve such complex matters. Voting in secrecy has a way of lowering the volatility that may be reaching a boiling point between individuals, to reach a stage where the differences of opinions may never be resolved, and may cause damage to relationships between workers within an industry if not solved expeditiously.

One thing i have found helpful is to tell the editor and videographer about the main points in my mind such as the price, the died line, period of video, the importance of the product and the importance of video.

One of the ways production progress can be inadvertently de-railed is to ignore the realities of production budget limitations, availability of talent on both sides of the camera, etc. Recognizing any potential difficulties early on can make it easier to be flexible and work together to accomplish the best possible production within the limitations that exist. Having worked on music videos in the early days, I can remember working with time constraints and limited resources often. Some of the best results come from working with small agile crews and people who were willing to do more than just one job on set, and maximize limited resources.

When team members respect each other's expertise and contributions, it enhances collaboration and creates a positive working environment. Respecting diverse perspectives and skills allows everyone to feel valued, leading to more effective problem-solving and a stronger final product. Mutual respect is the foundation of a successful team, driving both creativity and efficiency.

Respecting each other is an important or very important or super important or the most essential thing between the client and the editor and videographer. Its not only about how much you gonna pay but also its about the respect they can work on the video and finish it perfectly without any money because you are respectful to them and on the other side if the editor and the videographer respect you you will be ready to pay them any amount of money .

Le respect et l'écoute attentive des idées des autres, même celles que l'on ne partage pas, peut ouvrir des portes créatives. L'entente entre les membres du groupe favorise grandement le bon déroulé du projet, c'est une évidence. Chaque idée doit être écoutée car l'absence de cohésion ou de respect mutuel freine énormément le potentiel créatif.

Continuous learning is part and parcel of progress but it's not limited to a specific project or field. Every individual has unique set of abilites and skills and by sharing that knowledge one can not only benefit others but also improve information in that skill too. Both Videography and Video Editing are closely interlinked with each other as two sides of one coin. Video production also has many subfields and people working in all the fields must collaborate with each other in that way they cannot not only learn from each other but also carry out the project successfully.

Being humble and accepting the fact that the ceiling is the sky and there is no limit that caps a person's ability, it's fine to believe that you are the best but your ego will get in the way of your goals to make it to the top. To be a mediator a mentor and a good listener are all important attributes when it comes to overcoming the test of collaborating with others in order for the production to be a success.
