One thing I've found helpful is... excuse the pun... getting help. If you already have too many commitments and you don't have enough time for a new commitment, and if this new commitment is something you can't possibly refuse (maybe it's from a regular client, or it is a long-term project to which you will be fully committed later on), make sure you have a network of contacts of other fellow translators that can help you. They can provide you with a translation draft that you can carefully revise, or they can handle a chunk of the project, and you can share the budget.

This experience taught me to prioritize not just based on urgency, but also on my familiarity with the subject matter. Now, I evaluate both deadline and content complexity before accepting projects, ensuring that I can deliver high-quality work consistently

My armamentarium of tech tools will certainly help me complete the tasks on time, ensuring quality while meeting client expectations. First of all, my customized corpora will help understanding texts to be translated, priming my mind with the best options and solutions. Then, CAT tools, with their translation memories and term bases, will help me be consistent and work fast and with accuracy. And last but not least, QA tools will help me deliver the best translation, without jeopardizing quality.

I stay focused on the job while nipping all potential distractions in the bud. It helps that I do not translate the traditional way. I read, I understand, and I write content that reads like an original. Proprietary terminology, if any, needs to be provided. If not I will use terminology that I know is correct in the given context.

I asses, first of all if I should accept the project or not. I am hardworking and efficient so, unless I am totally booked with interpreting jobs, I could usually accept urgent tasks, depending on the number of words. But do I want to? Is it worth it for my health and wellbeing? If I know I can do the project but I am not very happy with it. I will ask for a higher price. For this price I will give up my sleep and I will finish it for you. If they agree on the price then... I go ahead.

En revanche, il y a une frontière à ne pas dépasser, surtout à l'heure où la propriété intellectuelle du traducteur peut être mise à mal par des outils, qu'ils soient de TAO ou non, qui peuvent revendre vos mémoires de traduction à des groupes spécialisés dans la traduction par IA, qui ne se priveront pas de les utiliser pour alimenter leurs algorithmes.

It can be tempting to trust AI tools when you find yourself with short deadlines and more work than anticipated. However, I've found that not only does AI often decrease precision and creativity (there's strong evidence documenting that), but you may find yourself spending more time editing than you would have translating from scratch – if you want to deliver good quality. And that should be your number one priority to avoid damaging your reputation and losing future business. My advice would be to use CAT (if relevant for the content you're translating), a good spellcheck/style improver (my favorite is Antidote), and if it's not humanly possible to deliver on time, then let your client know, and figure out the best way forward with them.

Similarly, proofread meticulously: grammar, consistency, and formatting, context, intent. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about performance. When you proofread, think of it as fine-tuning the engine. You’re not just reviewing; you’re ensuring a smooth ride.

Il faut toujours relire plusieurs fois, et avec différents filtres. Personnellement, je fais toujours une relecture pour corriger l'orthographe et la grammaire, puis je relis pour retravailler le style et la ponctuation et si j'ai le temps, juste avant de rendre ma traduction à mon client, j'effectue une dernière relecture à froid, pour permettre une dernière prise de recul qui devrait suffire amplement à délivrer une traduction irréprochable.

The best practice is to sleep on a translation before proofreading. When tight deadlines make that impossible, we can at least take a long break doing something else (or nothing at all) before coming back to it with fresh eyes. I also recommend using a spellcheck/style improver such as Antidote, which might spot stuff that you would have missed – or at least, save you some time. For example, it will correct multiple typography errors with just one click! Aside from reading your translation out loud, there are a few tricks that might help you look at the text differently: printing it out (or reading it on an epaper device); changing the font, size, and/or color in your word processor; reading it backward, from the last sentence to the first.

I've found the cost/time/quality triangle useful when discussing deadlines (visuals can be found online). If the client wants a quick, cheap translation – the quality won't be top-of-the-range (and you can totally say that's not the kind of work you do!). If they want a punchy, culturally relevant transcreation, or clear and precise technical translation, and they need it by yesterday – it will be expensive (working at night and on weekends is fine if it's YOUR choice). And if they want good quality and reasonable costs – it takes time. You can explain your process, maybe compromise a little this once to meet client needs, while making clear that whenever possible, translation should be planned and prepared ahead of time. It does work!

To keep stress to an acceptable level, I think the most important thing is to manage your workload based on your needs and limitations. Of course, we sometimes say yes when we should have said no, or underestimate the time and energy required for a task – it happens to everyone. We should strive to learn from those experiences, learn to listen to our bodies when we need to slow down, to trust our instincts when they spot a red flag. If your current client base keeps on creating stressful situations for you, if it's making you feel overworked and frustrated with the quality you deliver, then it's probably time to look for new clients. And possibly change direction in your networking, business development and/or specialization.
