What is the role of capital markets in the economy?

Capital markets help to promote efficiency in the allocation of financial resources and in the companies that operate, thereby deepening the markets and creating wealth for individuals. An example is the privatization of Nahco plc on the Nigerian Stock Exchange(NSE). Capital markets lower the risk by using their financial leverage which means their maneuvers in the relationship between the state and the banks for the primary market and the relationship between the bank and investors for the secondary market. They use the liquidity level to fix the exchange currency rate during a high inflation situation.

1) From an economic perspective, capital markets diversify systemic financial risk as opposed to the banking system that concentrates risk. 2) From a financial perspective, capital markets provide an alternative platform for financial intermediation that supplements the banking system. They provide more efficient capital to businesses based on price discovery and risk-return trade-off. 3) From an investment perspective, capital markets provide the much needed products that mobilise investment capital with better outcomes than savings products offered by the banking system. 4) From a policy perspective, capital markets are the barometer that often influences a part of monetary and fiscal policy making and financial regulation.

Furthermore, capital markets play a crucial role in resource allocation through price discovery, valuing assets based on real-time information for informed investing. They also enable the cross-border flow of capital, fostering global economic integration and development. Lastly, these markets provide tools for risk management, offering ways to hedge against fluctuations in currencies, interest rates, and commodity prices.

O mercado de capitais traz benefícios essenciais para a economia, apoiando o crescimento das empresas, fortalecendo as finanças públicas e promovendo a estabilidade financeira. Empresas têm acesso a uma ampla variedade de recursos para financiar sua expansão, inovação e diversificação, ao mesmo tempo em que estão sujeitas à supervisão do mercado. Governos podem usar esses mercados como uma fonte alternativa de financiamento para seus projetos. Investidores podem participar da economia com base em seu perfil de risco e expectativas de retorno. Acredito que o grande desafio dos mercados de capitais, especialmente em mercados emergentes, é trazer as pessoas "comuns" para o mercado. É difícil explicar e mostrar a grandeza do mercado de capitais e como ele impacta no dia-a-dia.
