While everyone is "innovating" start with the basics and make sure your Talent Acquisition Team is a well oiled machine! Make sure they prioritize candidate experience by responding to candidates in a timely manner. The early bird gets the worm, so check new applications often and make sure you get back to candidates before your competitors do. Communicate clearly and give the candidates extra updates if things are moving a little slower than anticipated. Candidates love to hear from you even if it's a message asking for their patience. Keep them warm and they will want to see where things go. If your recruiter is friendly, communicative, and transparent, it is likely that the candidate will associate those qualities with your organization.

It’s not always as simple as professional coursework, nor is it always as complex as a complete leadership ladder. Where can people move horizontally? How can you help the dive deeper into a skill set. Ultimately, it will all help your business. Once built, spend a little budget on communicating. You could have the world’s best development program, but it will fall miserably short if no one knows it’s there.

If you are not the right partner now, doesn't mean this has to be forever. By connecting and following the activities of an interesting profile you can get much more insight about that candidate than in an interview process. In addition, you may learn which content and with opportunities are most appealing to them. Re-contacting is much easier then. You may be able to offer exactly what your talents need and can build on previous contact.

I've built several talent communities ranging from informal, non-process based, up to formal, supported by a CRM/ATS, regular communication etc. The simplest way to approach it is to meet & interview candidates that are likely to fit your company at some point in the future, even if there is not an open job. Just be up-front and tell the candidates that is the situation. On the other end of the scale you can pro-actively approach candidates you are likely to need in the future, screen them, sell them the vision, show them company info and then keep in touch. A mix of email newsletters, LinkedIn content (make sure they follow your company page), F2F catch-ups or Zoom/Teams calls and group events are all great ways to keep people engaged.

The usual metrics include time to hire, diversity information, agency spend and others, but if you do a deeper dive into the entire hiring process, you will uncover information that will allow you to be more efficient, create a better candidate experience, be more competitive, and make the process more robust and rewarding to everybody involved.

Data very often provides the accurate perspective, TA Team members can sometimes think they know where they in in terms of stats, hard data will either confirm that or expose where there are areas to learn, improve or revisit requisitions. Data is an integral part of the TA world now, but a word of caution, please don't think Time to Fill is always a good measure, its potentially ok with volume recruitment, but gives the sense that a TA team are focused on speed, Quality is more important is most instances, hire for longevity, not just a quick win!

The easier you can make the application process the better. The best candidates, and even sub par candidates do not want to spend 20 minutes typing their experience that's on their resume that they just uploaded. Stop doing that.

While all the listed components are important, the hiring and on-boarding process has to be top of mind as it sets the tone. The hiring process has to be thorough but swift. Generally speaking, more than 3 interviews is a waste and no further usable information can really be gleaned provided the interviewers are trained and prepared. And this process needs to move at a good pace. Insert unnecessary interviews and drag out the process and you've already made the candidate less interested (if they remain interested at all). Upon hire, a robust and structured on-boarding process is the next step in making sure you have a happy and engaged new hire.
