What interview questions can you ask to assess a candidate's adaptability and flexibility?

I think it’s effective to use a combination of both behavioral and situational questions during an interview. Let’s find out what someone’s done and what someone will do the best understanding, predict how their skills will be transferable in an organization. I honestly feel the best interviews don’t even feel like interviews at all, but rather, good conversations that highlight the strength of the candidate and also of the company.

Some interview questions that can be used to assess a candidate's adaptability and flexibility include: Tell me about a time when you had to adapt to a new work environment or process. How do you handle unexpected changes or challenges at work? Can you describe a situation where you had to adjust your communication style to work with someone from a different background? Give an example of when you had to learn a new skill or technology quickly. Tell me about a time when you had to prioritize multiple tasks with competing deadlines.

I ask about experiences handling unexpected changes or challenges in past roles, exploring their responses to evolving priorities. Questions about working in diverse environments or with cross-functional teams help assess adaptability. I delve into instances where they had to pivot strategies or methods due to unforeseen circumstances. By exploring their past adaptability, I gain insights into how they approach change and navigate uncertainty, crucial for determining their suitability for dynamic work environments.

To assess candidate's adaptability and flexibility we can ask following questions: 1) We can put them in hypothetical scenarios related to our industry or role and ask candidate how would they respond? 2)Will ask the candidates about the situations where they had to adapt to unexpected change? 3)Will ask for instances in their past roles where they had to deal with change or take new responsibilities.

I normally discuss a real situation from recent times and encourage to give elaborated replies to handle a the situation in various possible ways. My most recurring questions are about handling positive conflicts or blue eyed persons in a team. For young professionals, my questions evolve around convincing seniors for a new idea and SOP changes etc.

I tend to ask candidates to describe a time when a client or manager gave you specific instructions and then later on, changed everything....how did you handle it? This is a good way to determine how flexible people are and if they can roll with the changes.

It is important to list out the qualities required for a job and ask relevant questions about the personality traits needed for the role to assess the candidate better. This can be done by mapping the qualities required to situational or behavioral questions during the screening process. For instance, a question like "Have you ever encountered a difficult person in your life with whom you had a difference of opinion while working in a group project or team? " can help determine if the candidate is a team player. The candidate can describe the issue they faced while working on a group project or team, identify the difficult person, and explain how they resolved the issue.

I like asking questions about how they handle specific situations that are relevant to the role I’m hiring for. e.g when I’m hiring for a career coach I would ask “Have you ever worked with a job seeker for 6 months or longer that didn’t receive an offer? If so, how did you handle that?” It is specific enough that ensure relevancy and broad enough for them to allow them to answer that is various ways.

Situational questions assessed with the STAR methodology is an ideal way to assess the candidate's adaptability, flexibility, and even cultural fit. Pay close attention to how the candidate responds to the situational question as it may be reflective of how they might react at your organization.

You're managing a team with diverse working styles. A new team member joins who has a very different approach. How would you ensure effective collaboration and cohesiveness within the team?

The old “what are your weaknesses” has evolved; it’s about measuring self awareness. Being humble is so underrated! Same for proactiveness - I want to hear when people picked up the ball and ran with it.

A good way to learn something about self-assessment can be a question about communication towards different audiences. Can you share an example of when you had to adjust your communication style to effectively work with different personalities or diverse teams?

If adaptability and flexibility are key competencies for the role you are hiring for, you can ask a candidate about their ideal work environment. If they share that they love a structured and process oriented environment, there is a good chance a role requiring adaptability and flexibility may not be ideal for that candidate.

It’s not so much the questions you ask, but how you understand the answers. It’s about delving further and further into a person’s experience. Start with setting up an environment that allows a person to feel comfortable to share and elaborate, asking good questions and knowing why you are asking these questions. Don’t dismiss after the first answer - ask and ask again. I once sat in on an interview that was an absolute master class in recruiting - lots of questions, lots of answers, it never felt like questions were being asked for the sake of it, and questions were asked in a way that the person being interviewed just wanted to keep talking and sharing.

When gaging a candidates adaptability or flexibility try hitting them with these Qs: Ask about a time when plans went haywire—how'd they handle it? Dive into their comfort level with change—ever switch gears mid-project? Quiz about tackling new tech or tools—how'd they learn it? Throw in scenarios—what if priorities shifted suddenly? Share a tricky situation they faced and how they adapted. Assess teamwork—ever cover for a colleague in a pinch? Oh, and stories! Stories show how they roll with the punches. These questions dig into their adaptability groove—flexibility and thinking on their feet!

A question I like to ask is, "Can you describe a time when you had to adjust your approach midway through a project due to changing requirements or unexpected challenges? How did you handle the situation, and what was the outcome?" This question insightfully assesses a candidate's adaptability by focusing on real-life experiences with change, revealing their problem-solving skills and mindset in handling challenges.

Asking Contextual Interview questions helps both interviewer and candidate to get to the point (based on role requirements), as well as quickly assess if a candidate would be a good team player/mesh with certain organizational ideals. My suggestion is to ask no more than 4 per round, and use the responses as ways to ask deeper delving questions to get to know the candidate in round 2 and beyond.

Start the interview with “Before we begin, what questions are you concerned we might not get answered in our time together” It’s incredibly broad, allows them to ask their questions first, but engages them to critically think about what is important to them, and how that compares to a “standard interview”. Red flags are asking generic questions because they either haven’t prepared or have a hard time thinking on their feet. This is a curve ball question because it brings what is normally the last 5 minutes of an interview right to the very beginning. But is an amazing way to drive the conversation. Awesome candidates will stand out here, mediocre or worse ones will clearly fumble.
