What are effective ways to support students experiencing homelessness?

Avoid using things that statistically widen the gap between students in disadvantaged and unstable situations, like homelessness, and those in stable households, especially those things that have been shown to have few if any benefits comparatively, such as graded homework and themed dress up days. Do not support educational programs that require students to come from a stable household and bring additional money to school to participate in learning activities.

Parent involvement in academic support plans Collaborative engagement between school staff and parents/guardians to develop and implement relevant academic interventions. Yes, especially to students in developing countries face this kind of a situation. Most do not live with their parents due to many factors including family separation, extreme poverty, unequal treatment, etc. Differrent organizations and individuals have been helping them with uniforms, shelter, as well as supporting fees. I am one of them who have supported students especially girls, with sanitary pads, uniforms, etc.

The role of a school is to act as a micro community in which each and every student to find a safe place, in which judgement is out of the question! If they feel safe, they will open up. But their stories must be closed in the teacher's heart and supported by all means!

I believe that in any school, there's a counseling department to counsel and guide students who face different situations. The teachers are the ones to help these students, because they face challenges while on their way home or at home too. So it's wise to listen to them and assist them or refer the case to other teachers as well for more support.

This is a great question. As the Executive Director of a homeless shelter I can tell you the majority of people who come to us do so not because they have run out of resources, it’s because they ran out of relationships. I faced being a homeless veteran when my wife was laid off and I was in school. We lost everything. But I had a great relationship with a friend from Church who allowed me to work for him while we figured things out. A great Church family who helped us pay for a moving truck. And lastly a relationship with my parents who allowed my family (wife, 2 kids, and two dogs) to live with them while we figured things out. That’s why our programming focuses on reconciling and rebuilding key relationships.

Regular - ACES/ Adverse Childhood Experiences & Trauma informed care training for all staff - especially professors, deans, provosts, & chancellors. Provide regular access - for traditionally excluded voices from homeless population - have their voices, desires, solutions - represented, supported, mentored in decision making spaces Even better if these trainings include immersive poverty simulation experiences . See MACA - Missouri Community Action Network, & Waianae Poverty Simulation in Hawaii. Experiential activities, similar to the brown eyes/blue eyes practices, allow participants to address unconscious bias, & practice decisionmaking under constrained circumstances.

Often times - individual depts will have access to resources that can be deployed to support student needs. Centralizing a resource bank that oulines customized supports available thru their deparments - that is accessible to students is helpful. For example : At a university that I was employed at - my department had a student services section that contained discretionary funds that could be utilized to support students in need.

I'm my opinion, students experiencing homelessness are in dire need of finance to cope up with multiple things starting from personal to academic aspects. Teachers can provide support to them in a way that may reduce their financial burdens. For example,assign them some tasks and pay;provide printed material for free; provide meals as and when possible. Much more could be done to support them and make them a leading part of society.

The greatest failure of Today's Education System is that ~ They focussed on "WELL FILLED BRAINS" rather than "WELL FORMED BRAINS" . Most professors came, deliver lectures, gave assignments and leave.And only minority of them are those who appreciate the little success of students because today's crowd seems to think that success only means something really great,grand. Most teachers are goal oriented whereas according to me we should focus on the "SYSTEM", A system of continuous improvements.They have to concerned with students current trajectory, than with their current results.As the purpose of setting goals is to win the game.The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game.Thus, you also connects with them emotionally .

I was homeless through half my masters program. Outreach for it never happened and I was in a social work program. Outreach and community support services should be offered.

I had a professor when I was halfway through my bachelors degree who knew that I was dependent on my G.I. bill for my rent. I never said anything it just came to a point to where I couldn’t afford gas to get to school . I had to choose having a home over education. I chose my home, as I had dealt with homelessness before. It’s a ugly beast that doesn’t get much empathy or compassionate response, as we are thought to be tough survivors, and to not complain. It could be worse. This professors actions gave me hope . That they were leaders and teachers out there who truly understood what this meant for a student. To provide social-emotional support while I chased after a educational dream. A good professor can change the world.

I believe residential care facilities are huge for homeless school-age children and teens. So often, these programs are saturated with kids caught up in the legal system. While they need the program too, they usually just want to “serve their time”. Kids experiencing homelessness are usually more grateful for an opportunity to live and learn while their basic needs are being met.

Make certain that your classroom and your contributions to the lives of all children inculcate a feeling of belonging and warmth and support. For many students, with special needs or not, a place to feel comfortable and accepted and respected is the closest place that resembles home— whether they have a home in reality or not! Most of the students I know appreciate a place that is non- judgmental and loving. Schools are needed more than ever to fill the void of “a soft place to land!”

One of the things that has provided support to our unhoused students and their families, has involved actively collaborating with our city to make sure our homeless students have access public transportation, 24/7 and 365. For some of our kids, that access to transportation massively contributes to providing stability and the preservation of meaningful relationships with the adults who strive to serve them. It has also allowed for interning and employment opportunities post-graduation. It’s not a comprehensive answer, but that bus pass has provided many with substantive support.

Hey Bob: As a former foster kid and homeless student, I am starting a non profit this year to help homeless students and foster kids. Our organization will provide street outreach services and deliver emergency food, clothing and hygiene supplies. Since the closure of the EOC Sanctuary a year ago ( leaving a huge gap in services to our youth under 18 years old) there is no single agency serving these vulnerable kids.
