I prefer "transferable experience" over "transferable skills" and that's because I see too many resumes where the person feels all they need to do is squeeze as many skill-related keywords into their resume and they'll be fine. In my experience, they won't. Skills on their own carry very little weight because they're subjective - YOU are telling the reader that you're good at something and expecting them to take your word for it. Why would they? Focus instead on how you excelled in past positions so future employers can picture you having the same impact on their company.

Spoiler Alert: It is not enough to simply sprinkle buzzwords into your resume. The hiring manager wants to know how you have put these skills into action, with quantifiable proof! That is where achievements come into play. Highlight achievements that are the most relevant to the target position. I like to take this a step further and use language from the target position or industry to write out these achievements. That will help you both optimize for the ATS and show alignment to the target position.

After assisting hundreds get new opportunities… Do you best to showcase those achievements that represent accurately your abilities to perform like tasks to the job description. You should not make the recruiter/hiring manager have to hunt for these. Showcasing your relevant past experiences will hold more weight then talking about transferable skills. You need to “SHOW” not “TELL” people about your success, think to yourself, “How can I prove this to them?” This generates very better results for my clients!

Quite often when reviewing resumes, I see a lot of mini job descriptions within the "experience" portion. Having a couple of bullet points about what you did in role is can be helpful however whenever possible provide your achievements/accomplishments under each role. In this data driven world, metrics go a long way. So whenever you get the opportunity back your points up with real numbers. E.g. reduced time-to-hire by 30% OR improved engagement by 17% based on last year's engagement survey OR handled 8 projects simultaneously with a combined budget of $1.5M CAD. Your proudest achievements can even be highlighted at the top of your resume in an "achievements" section to really draw attention to it.

And spell check. some hiring managers can’t see past spelling errors. Ask someone to read it and give you feedback.
