Senior teachers resist edtech tools in favor of traditional methods. Are you ready to bridge the gap?

Edtech is certainly not a fit for everything, but what has dumbfounded me over the past 30 years is when some administrators or educators say they will not consider a new program that is not supported with rigorous research, yet they are perfectly fine with continuing to use old-school systems and methods that we know do not work well and have been failing students for decades. I wish they would at least take a chance on piloting something new when it makes sense to do so.

It is important to understand the concerns of our senior teachers to use tools and technology while simultaneously demonstrating the benefits of the same in a way that aligns with their educational philosophy. There is a need to go blended, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Peer mentorship and pilot programs wherein tech-savvy teachers mentor their colleagues to allow them to see the benefits first-hand without getting stressed out.

O primeiro passo é entender as razões pelas quais os professores seniores preferem os métodos tradicionais. Isso envolve ouvir suas preocupações, identificar suas necessidades e reconhecer o valor das suas experiências. Muitas vezes, a resistência pode ser devido à falta de familiaridade ou à percepção de que as novas ferramentas são complexas ou desnecessárias.

Engana-se quem pensa que a relutância é de seniores. Percebo jovens colegas com maiores dificuldades que nós seniores, ou velhos, como muitos nos chamam... Hoje, nós seniores temos a sorte ou vantagem do vasto conhecimento acadêmico e IA ao nosso favor, podemos apenas mediar as aulas, enquanto os jovens professores estão com grande défice de conhecimento por pensarem que as informações disponíveis na web, são saberes... Hoje, após mais de 25 anos docência sou mediadora do conhecimento tenho LITERACIA DIGITAL e uso as tecnologias ao meu favor. E, meu jovens colegas estão com dificuldades de fazerem as perguntas corretas aos chatbots

I know of an organisation that introduced a blended learning model that integrated EdTech tools gradually, allowing teachers to see their benefits firsthand. By providing comprehensive training and showcasing how these tools enhance traditional methods, the team eased their transition. Regular feedback sessions ensured their concerns were addressed promptly. Encouraging a growth mindset and demonstrating how EdTech can complement rather than replace their expertise helped bridge the gap and fostered a more innovative teaching environment.

Para que os professores seniores se sintam confortáveis com as ferramentas EdTech, é crucial oferecer treinamento adequado. Isso inclui workshops práticos, sessões de mentoria e suporte contínuo. O objetivo é mostrar como essas ferramentas podem complementar e melhorar seus métodos de ensino, ao invés de substituí-los.
